No. 9 Wingate claims 199-116 SAC victory over No. 19 Carson-Newman Saturday

Wingate, N.C.----The No. 9 Wingate women's swimming team won six-of-nine events Saturday to claim a 199-116 South Atlantic Conference triumph over visiting No. 19 Carson-Newman at the Wingate Natatorium. Bulldog sophomore Livia Kingsland won two individual events, the 1000 Freestyle (10:23.29) and the 400 Individual Medley (4:31.23).
 
Wingate's depth pays dividends
 
Freshman Mathilda Sandberg and senior Natalia Dwojak contributed to two victories as well. Individually, she won the 100 Butterfly with a new pool record time of 55.20. In the afternoon's first event, Sandberg swam the butterfly leg on Wingate's victorious 200 Medley Relay quartet. The Bulldogs posted a time of 1:44.04. Sandberg was joined by sophomore Elizabete Paula Ozola and seniors Dwojak and Giulianna Garcia.
 
Dwojak won the 50 Freestyle with her time of 23.50, edging second-place Sandberg by 0.51 seconds. Dwojak finished second in the 200 Breaststroke with her time of 2:21.67. Senior team captain Franziska Muhlberger won the 200 Breaststroke by 0.03 seconds, thanks to her time of 2:21.64.
 
Ozola and Garcia stay busy
 
Ozola finished second in the 100 Backstroke (57.98) and third in the 200 Freestyle (1:58.75). Garcia picked up silver medals in the 100 Butterfly (57.99) and the 400 Individual Medley (4:34.39). The pair swam on Wingate's second-place 400 Freestyle Relay team as well (3:33.06).
On the afternoon, Wingate had six gold medals, eight silver medals and four bronze medals.
 
Up Next for the No. 9 Wingate women's swimming team
 
The Wingate swimming teams completed first semester final exams Friday; second semester classes begin Thursday, January 8. The Bulldogs will celebrate Senior Day with a special ceremony on Saturday, January 17. The South Atlantic Conference championship meet is February 4-7 in Kingsport, Tennessee. The four-day event will be contested at the Kingsport Aquatic Center.
