Eagles prevail 65-56 at Wingate

Wingate, N.C.----The Carson-Newman University Eagles outscored Wingate University 39-25 in the second half Saturday afternoon en route to a 65-56 victory over the Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference women's basketball action in Cuddy Arena. The Eagles move to 8-3 overall and 5-1 in the SAC, while Wingate falls to 5-5 overall and 1-4 in league play.

KEY STATS

- Carson-Newman shot 42 percent from the field, going 10-for-31 from three-point range (32 percent)
- Wingate shot 33 percent from the field, going two-for-nine from deep (22 percent)
- The Bulldogs held a 47-31 rebounding advantage and 18-2 edge in second-chance points

- A Chavis triple and Alex Merceron jumper put the 'Dogs on top 13-10 with 2:21 remaining
- A Hill three with 1:10 to go gave C-N a 15-13 lead

SECOND QUARTER

- A Karli Haworth three in the opening seconds strtched the Carson-Newman lead to five
- Wingate countered with a 12-2 run to take a 25-20 advantage
- Bacon had six points in the flurry; Isaac added four points
- An Emily Gonzalez layup with three minutes left trimmed the lead to one
- Laney Beale's layup in the final seconds gave the Bulldogs a 31-26 halftime advantage

THIRD QUARTER

- Bacon's layup at the 8:37 mark gave the 'Dogs a seven-point cushion
- The Eagles scored the next 11, taking a 37-33 lead on Hill's triple at the 6:49 mark
- A Hughes bucket a minute later pulled Wingate back within two
- A Haworth free throw in the final minute made it 45-39
- Two Isaac free throws with four seconds left pulled the 'Dogs back within four

FOURTH QUARTER

- A Heath triple two minutes in gave the Eales a 51-44 advantage
- A Chavis layup and Montiel three made it a two-point game with 4:47 to go
- A Keeleigh Rogers triple with three minutes remaining gave C-N a 58-51 cushion
- A Hughes free throw a minute later cut the lead to four
- Layups from Mattie Nuckolls and Gonzalez made it 62-54 with a minute left
- Wingate got no closer than six the rest of the way
