SAC CHAMPS! #16 Wingate claims third straight regular season title with 16-13 win at Limestone

Gaffney, S.C.----The 16th-ranked Wingate University Bulldogs overcame an early 6-1 deficit Saturday afternoon, using a 15-4 run to prevail 16-13 at Limestone University in South Atlantic Conference women's lacrosse action. The Bulldogs move to 15-1 overall and 10-0 in the SAC, capturing the third straight regular season SAC title. The Saints fall to 11-4 overall and 8-2 in league play. The 'Dogs are 29-1 in league play the last three years. Wingate has now won 12 straight games this season.

FIRST QUARTER

- Keira Martin got Limestone on the board 50 seconds in
- Millard scored at the 11:24 mark to tie it at one
- The Saints scored the final three goals of the frame, with a Reese Hjertaas goal making it 4-1

SECOND QUARTER

- Another Hjertaas goal at the 13:30 mark gave Limestone a 6-1 advantage
- Blakely answered with back-to-back goals to make it 6-3 at the 12:30 mark
- Solero's goal 45 seconds later cut the lead to two
- Sophie Shortino's goal pushed the LU lead back to three
- Higgins scored with nine minutes left to pull Wingate back within two
- Garvin's goal off a Scarfogliero assist a minute later made it a one-goal game
- A Hjertaas goal at the 6:37 mark gave the Saints an 8-6 lead
- Wilgeroth scored off a Garvin assist with 4:10 to go to cut it back to one
- Millard scored off a Watson assist less than a minute later to tie it
- Millard struck again with 2:17 to go, giving the 'Dogs a 9-8 halftime lead

THIRD QUARTER

- Benner scored three minutes into the half to give Wingate a two-goal advantage
- Jocelin Martin answered with a goal to pull Limestone back within one
- Millard answered with back-to-back goals, getting a Garvin assist on the second one to make it 12-9
- Scarfogliero scored off a Blakely assist at the 4:28 mark to stretch the lead to four
- Brooke Surace scored a minute later, but the 'Dogs responded with three straight goals
- Millard scored the first at the 2:21 mark, while Garvin struck 27 seconds later
- Watson scored off Weber's assist with 40 seconds left to put the 'Dogs on top 16-10
- Jones scored with 13 seconds left to cut the lead to five heading to the fourth

FOURTH QUARTER

- Jones scored three minutes in to make it 16-12
- Hjertaas scored the final goal of the day at the 10:46 mark
