Wingate, N.C. ---- Wingate University's Athletic Communications office got a new name over the weekend: the David Sherwood Athletic Communications Suite. During halftime of Saturday's men's basketball contest versus Emory & Henry, University President Dr. Rhett Brown, President Emeritus Dr. Jerry McGee, Director of Athletics Joe Reich, and former Director of Athletics Steve Poston presented Sherwood with a plaque commemorating the occasion.

Sherwood, Assistant Athletic Director for Public Relations and Student-Athlete Recognition, is in his 41st year with Bulldog Athletics. A Wingate native, Sherwood has been working in the Wingate Sports Information/Athletic Communications office since his graduation from Wingate in 1985. He helped Wingate earn more Academic All-America® honors than any other institution in North Carolina since 2000. He has served in various capacities for the University, including sports information director and served as the interim softball coach from 1990-93.

What they are saying -

David Sherwood - "Wingate University means so much to me. I have had the privilege to work with some of the best people over the years. For the school to honor me in this way…is humbling. I am grateful beyond measure."

Joe Reich - "David Sherwood is Wingate University. His lifelong commitment to Wingate and the hundreds of lives he has positively impacted is inspiring to me and to so many others. We are blessed to have him as a Bulldog."

Dr. Rhett Brown - "You'd be hard pressed to find someone who personifies Wingate University's spirit as much as David Sherwood. For more than 40 years, David has elevated our athletic communications office into one of the very best in NCAA Division II, tirelessly championing our student-athletes and ensuring their academic and athletic achievements receive the recognition they deserve. His unwavering commitment, integrity, and love for Wingate have strengthened our entire community and helped define what it means to bleed Navy Blue and Vegas Gold."

Dr. Jerry McGee - "When I was president, people would always ask me how our athletes win so many awards. I tell them that Wingate has three things that set us apart: 1. Great coaches. 2. Student-athletes worthy of recognition. 3. David Sherwood. David has helped us win countless Academic All-America, player of the week, month, and year, and many other awards to make our student-athletes stand out."

A plaque now hangs outside the Athletic Communications office with the following inscription: "Celebrating the 'godfather' of athletic communications at Wingate University, a passionate supporter of Bulldog athletics for more than four decades."
