‘Dogs use six-run ninth inning to take down Carson-Newman 13-10 in series opener

Jefferson City, Tenn.----The Wingate University Bulldogs plated six runs in the top of the ninth inning Friday afternoon, rallying for a 13-10 victory at Carson-Newman University in South Atlantic Conference baseball action. The Bulldogs improve to 27-9 overall and 17-5 in the SAC, while the Eagles fall to 20-14 overall and 10-12 in league play.

THIRD INNING

- Bradley Soto Diaz added a sacrifice fly to tie it at two

FOURTH INNING

- A Courville single and Griffin double put 'Dogs on second and third
- Evans launched a three-run homer to center, giving Wingate a 5-2 advantage

FIFTH INNING

- Powell's solo homer stretched the lead to four
- A Colton Evans solo shot in the bottom of the frame made it 6-3

SIXTH INNING

- Carson Cochran drew a bases-loaded walk to pull the Eagles within two
- Evans connected on a grand slam to give Carson-Newman an 8-6 advantage

SEVENTH INNING

- Soto Diaz added a solo shot in the seventh to give the Eagles a three-run cushion

EIGHTH INNING

- Karpowicz led off the inning with a double, then moved to third on Courville's single
- He scored on a double play to make it 9-7
- Cole Nathan launched a solo homer in the bottom of the frame, pushing the lead back to three

NINTH INNING

- Groppuso drew a one-out walk, then moved to third on a Powell double
- McCammon's RBI single plated Groppuso to make it a two-run game
- Karpowicz followed with the big blow, a three-run homer to put the 'Dogs on top 11-10
- Courville followed with a double, then went to third on Griffin's single
- Courville scored on a C-N error to extend the lead to two
- Benamati added an RBI single to make it 13-10
- After a leadoff walk in the bottom of the ninth, Morton got back-to-back strikeouts
- Back-to-back walks then loaded the bases for the Eagles
- Morton induced a game-ending groundout to finish off the victory

WRAPUP

- Carpenter got the win, allowing a run on two hits in 1 2/3 innings, striking out two
- Morton got the saves, striking out two in a scoreless ninth inning
- Kyle Adams took the loss, allowing four runs on four hits, facing four batters

- The teams wrap up the series with a doubleheader Saturday at noon
