ON TO THE ’SHIP! No. 4 Wingate wins twice to advance to NCAA championship finals

Boulder City, Nevada----The No. 4 Wingate University men's golf team won two medal match play contests Thursday, advancing to its first-ever NCAA Division II national championship finals at the Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Bulldogs defeated No. 8 Columbus State 3-2 in the quarterfinals and No. 28 Missouri-St. Louis 3.5-1.5 in the semifinals.
 
Wingate will face No. 3 Florida Southern in Friday's finals at 12 p.m. EDT. The FSC Mocs defeated No. 23 Colorado Christian 3-2 and No. 2 Lee 4-1 to advance to the title tilt. Florida Southern has 13 previous national championships with the most recent in 2017.
 
No. 4 Wingate 3.5, No. 28 Missouri-St. Louis 1.5 (semifinals)
 
- Brandon Skidmore won his match 3-up with four birdies
- Lewis Beeden claimed a 2-up victory, shooting a five-under-par 67
- Beeden had seven birdies; He needed them, as his opponent shot a 69
- Alfie Storer tied his match with UMSL's Trigg Lindahl
- Both Storer and Lindahl posted identical rounds of one-under-par 71
- Mattia D'Errico matched Skidmore's effort with a 3-up victory
- D'Errico shot a one-under-par 71 with five birdies
- UMSL's Daniel Solavera defeated Wingate's Cole Rouse
- Solavera shot a six-under-par 66, posting seven birdies to give the Tritons their only win
 
No. 4 Wingate 3, No. 8 Columbus State 2 (quarterfinals)
 
- Beeden delivered a dominant performance for the Bulldogs
- Beeden fired a five-under round with six birdies, winning his match 3-up
- Rouse came through in the final match, carding a four-under round
- Rouse had five birdies to win 1-up and help secure the team victory
- D'Errico added another crucial point for Wingate, winning his match 1-up
- Skidmore played strong golf, shooting three-under with five birdies, but fell 2-down
- Storer also battled in a close match, finishing one-over with four birdies
- Storer dropped his match 1-down
