Wingate Football mourns the loss of Mike Johnson

Wingate, N.C.----It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of Mike Johnson, a devoted husband, father, businessman, philanthropist, and friend of Wingate University Athletics.

Mike and his wife, Carmen, have been extraordinary supporters of our football program and the entire athletic department, leaving a lasting legacy through their generosity, including the Johnson Family Video Board at Irwin Belk Stadium and the future Johnson Family Lobby in the Truth Center for Sports Performance. While Mike achieved tremendous success as the owner of Mike Johnson Hickory Toyota, his greatest accomplishment was the family he and Carmen built. He was a remarkable father who instilled leadership, character, and a servant's heart in each of his four sons.

Tyler and Kyle proudly served as captains of the Wingate football team, while Austin played fullback at Tennessee and Clay was an offensive lineman at Elon. Mike's impact extended far beyond athletics or business—he was a man of faith, integrity, humility, and unwavering generosity who made everyone around him better. His legacy will live on through his family, his countless acts of kindness, and the many student-athletes whose lives have been enriched because of his support. Our thoughts and prayers are with Carmen, Tyler, Kyle, Austin, Clay, and the entire Johnson family during this difficult time.
