Wingate University Athletics

2010: Chris Nelson went 4-1 with a 4.12 ERA during his first season at Wingate. He made 10 starts for the Bulldogs, striking out 43 in 54 2/3 innings of work. The preseason All-SAC selection led the conference with a .212 opponents’ batting average. Nelson allowed two runs in six innings while striking out six in the win against Tusculum. He tossed a complete game three-hit shutout against Brevard, striking out seven while allowing only three singles. Nelson allowed four runs in 6 1/3 innings in the win against Newberry. He struck out six in 4 1/3 innings against West Florida.

Personal: Christopher Nelson is a transfer from Chowan University where he helped them to an NCAA Regional championship his freshman year. Nelson holds the record for most strike outs in a single game with 15. Nelson was named MVP and captain his senior year under head coach Ronald Vincent. Nelson was named to the All-Conference team as a freshman and a senior; He received an honorable mention nod as a junior. Nelson led the conference his senior year in wins with a record of 9-1 and a 2.00 ERA. Christopher is following in his brothers footsteps of being an athlete at Wingate University. Shelton Nelson played football at Wingate and graduated in 2009. Christopher and Shelton are the sons of Julian and Laurie Nelson.
