Biography

2007-08: Anna Atkinson was the SAC Player of the Year, SAC Scholar Athlete, and MVP of the Food Lion SAC Tournament and South Atlantic Regional Tournament. In addition, Atkinson was an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team selection, and Daktronics All-America third team selection. She was named the SAC Female Athlete of the Year and was the recipient of the prestigious President's Cup Award, becoming just the third person in league history to claim both awards. Atkinson was also named the NCAA Division II CCA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Atkinson led the SAC with 8.3 assists and 3.7 steals per game, while leading the Bulldogs with 14.8 points per game. She set the SAC single-season record with 125 steals, while dishing out 281 assists, second all time. Nationally, Atkinson was second in assist/turnover ration, third in assists per game and fifth in steals per game. She had 12 games with double-digit assists and eight double-doubles. Atkinson racked up at least four steals 17 times during the season. She opened the year with 15 points, 13 assists and eight steals against Queens (N.C.). Atkinson had 31 points, six assists and five steals at Lynn. She had 22 points, 12 assists and four steals against Francis Marion. Atkinson registered 20 points, 12 assists and five steals against Lincoln Memorial. She had 19 points, 10 assists, six steals and five rebounds against Mars Hill.

2006-07: Anna Atkinson was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III women’s basketball first team (college division), selected by CoSIDA in 2007. She possesses a perfect 4.00 GPA with a major in Biology. The 2006-07 SAC Scholar-Athlete Award winner for women’s basketball, Atkinson led the SAC in steals (2.3 steals per game) and assists-to-turnover ratio (2.69). An All-SAC performer, Atkinson averaged 7.3 points per game and 4.9 assists per game last year. She topped the team charts in minutes played with 34.0 minutes per game.

2005-06: Atkinson was named to the 2006 Women’s Division II Bulletin All- Freshman Team. The 2006 SAC Freshman of the Year, she also earned a spot on the All-SAC, second team. She directed the top-scoring offense in the SAC during her freshman campaign. The Bulldogs averaged 76.4 points per game during the 2005-06 season. In the SAC statistical rankings, Atkinson led the league in steals per game (2.1) and assist-to-turnover ratio (2.1). She finished second in the SAC in assists per game (5.0). Atkinson was 32nd in assists per game in the NCAA Division II rankings. She contributed 9.9 points per game and 3.5 rebounds per game during her first season as Wingate’s point guard. Atkinson tallied 10.8 points per game in SAC encounters. She had nine assists in four contests, including league wins over Newberry (Jan. 14) and Mars Hill (Feb. 18). Atkinson notched 20 points in a game twice, the most recent time in a 78-76 win at Newberry on Feb. 11. Atkinson hit a three-point field goal with 16 seconds remaining that gave Wingate the lead for good in a 67-64 victory over Clayton State University in the semi-finals of the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional Saturday, March 11. Atkinson was named to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional All-Tournament team.

HIGH SCHOOL: Atkinson is the career assist leader in the state of North Carolina with 898. She was the Northwestern (4A) Conference Player of the Year in 2004-05, leading the Titans of McDowell High School to a 26-1 overall record. The Titans won three NW4A regular season championships during her career. She was named the MVP of the GlaxoSmithKline Holiday Invitational Tournament in December of 2004, breaking the tournament records for assists.

The salutatorian of her graduating class, she played basketball, tennis and soccer during her athletic career at McDowell. An All-State choice in basketball as a senior, Atkinson was All-NW4A four years in a row. She also earned all-league honors in tennis (three years) and soccer (two years).
