Wingate University Athletics

Josh Yon had 33 tackles and four tackles for loss for the 2010 SAC champion Bulldogs. For the first time in school history, Wingate qualified for the NCAA Division II play-offs. Wingate defeated Morehouse (Nov. 20, 2010) in the school’s first NCAA play-off appearance, thanks to Yon’s season-high seven tackles. He added a QB hurry against the Maroon Tigers. At Carson-Newman (Oct. 9, 2010), Yon posted five tackles as the ‘Dogs earned their first-ever triumph over the C-N Eagles in Jefferson City. Yon received the Charlotte Touchdown Club scholarship in December.

In 2009, Yon recorded 3.5 tackles for a loss and 26 total tackles. Yon started 10 of 10 games. He posted six tackles each against North Greenville (Sept. 5, 2009) and Newberry (Oct. 17, 2009) and five stops against Brevard (Oct. 3, 2009). In 2008, Yon saw time in 11 games. His statistics included 20 tackles, four tackles for loss and one QB sack. Yon recorded a season-high five tackles in a SAC victory over Lenoir-Rhyne (Oct. 11, 2008). He had at least one tackle in 10 of Wingate’s 11 contests.

Yon was a three-sport athlete (football, wrestling, track) for the Kings Mountain High School Mountaineers. His football coach was Dave Farquharson. Yon earned the most outstanding lineman award two years in a row. He was all-conference two years and All-Gaston Gazette one year on the gridiron. An N.C. Scholar, Yon earned many honors in wrestling. He was all-conference and all-region two years each. Yon was named to the all-state team as a senior, gaining the KMHS outstanding wrestler award as well. He spent three semesters at Appalachian State prior to joining the Bulldog family.
