A second team All-SAC choice in 2008, Madi Welch had a goal and an assist for the Bulldogs last season. The Bulldog defense allowed only 0.69 goals per game in 2008, tops on the SAC charts. The Wingate defense also led the SAC with 11 shutouts on the season. Welch netted a goal in the 4-0 victory over Queens, while handing out an assist in Wingate’s 5-0 win at Brevard. Welch had 13 points for the Bulldogs in 2007, topping the team scoring charts. She posted four goals and five assists during the 2007 campaign. She had two goals in a 5-1 victory over Mount Olive (Sept. 19, 2007). Welch scored seven goals for the Bulldogs in her freshman season. She also tallied four assists, totaling 18 points. Welch scored four match-winners during the 2006 season. Welch earned SAC Player of the week honors on two occasions in 2006. 

An honor graduate at Sun Valley High, Welch played soccer for head coach Bill White. She earned All-South Piedmont Conference honors four years in a row. Welch was All-Union County first team as a senior. She was team captain and Sun Valley’s Best Defensive Player two years each. Welch played for the Charlotte United Fútbol Club, state champions in 2005 and 2006. Madi is the daughter of Chip and Jackie Wardwell.
