Biography

2014: Justin Somers moved to the outfield during his final season at Wingate, appearing in 37 games with 29 starts...Hit .288 with two homers, seven doubles, a triple, 19 RBI and 26 runs scored...Had a pinch-hit RBI double against Anderson...Drove in two runs and scored one at Newberry...Had two homers and four RBI against Catawba...Went three-for-five with a double and two runs scored against UNC Pembroke...Drove in a pair of runs against Mount Olive...Went three-for-five with a run at Carson-Newman...Had a double, RBI and run scored in final game of Carson-Newman series...Went three-for-four with a double, triple, two RBI and four runs scored against LMU...Scored a pair of runs against LMU in the SAC Tournament...Was three-for-five with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored against Erskine.

2013: Somers red-shirted during the 2013 season, recovering from surgery.

2012: Had eight appearances including four starts during his junior season...Went 0-2 with a 5.48 ERA, striking out 18 in 21 1/3 innings...Struck out four in 4 2/3 innings against Concord in first appearances of the year, allowing just one earned run...Tossed a perfect inning of relief against Barton, striking out one.

2011: Justin Somers earned second team All-SAC honors during his sophomore season. He started the year as Wingate’s closer, notching five saves for the Bulldogs. He transitioned into the weekend starter role, making eight starts on the year. Somers finished the season 7-4 with a league-best 2.60 ERA. He piled up 77 strikeouts in 62 1/3 innings of work, while opponents hit just .215 against him. Somers allowed only six extra-base hits against the 233 batters he faced. His best start of the year came in the SAC Tournament, when he went 7 1/3 innings against LMU without allowing an earned run, striking out 11.

2010: Somers went 3-1 with a 4.31 ERA and four saves in his freshman season at Wingate. HE made 16 appearances, tossing 31 1/3 innings for the Bulldogs. He got a win in his collegiate debut, striking out six in 3 2/3 innings against Lenoir-Rhyne without allowing a hit. Somers picked up his second win against Lenoir-Rhyne, going two innings and allowing only one hit. He notched his first save against Tusculum, going three innings while striking out five, allowing one earned run. Somers pitched a perfect ninth to notch a save at Lander. He tossed two scoreless innings for the save against Brevard. Somers went 2 2/3 innings, striking out two at Newberry for the save. He picked up his third win of the season against LMU, allowing two runs in 2 1/3 innings of work.

Personal: Somers was named MVP of his high school team along with being named to the All-Conference and All-Area teams in 2008 and 2009. Somers was winner of the American Legion Doak Walker Pitching Award in 2009. Somers was also acknowledged as the Star News All-Area Player of the year. Offensively Somers led EA Laney High School in batting average (.440), hits (32), doubles (11), home runs (3) and runs batted in (28). On the Defensive side he led his team as well as the county in wins with a 10-2 record. He had a 1.61 ERA over 56.3 innings and 99 strikeouts. Somers assisted Vern Barker’s EA Laney High School team to the schools best record in 2009 at 23-3. The team peaked at #2 in North Carolina. Justin’s grandfather Lynn Hickman is a Wingate Alumnus of 1947. He is the son of Joseph Weyers and Penny Somers.
