Tylan Merkerson earned All-SAC laurels in 2008; the league’s SIDs picked him for the 2009 pre-season All-SAC team as well. Merkerson collected 74 tackles (29 solo) in 2008, snagging four interceptions. Merkerson collected eight tackles (three solo) and two interceptions against Elizabeth City State. He was named SAC Defensive Player of the Week following the Bulldogs’ victory over ECSU. Merkerson recorded 17 tackles (10 solo) in 2007 with one pass interception. He had four tackles (three solo) and an interception at Tusculum. He posted three tackles each in road wins at Fayetteville State and UNC Pembroke. In 2006, Merkerson posted three tackles in 10 contests. He was All-State in football his senior year at the Asheville School. He lettered in football, basketball and track for the Blues. Merkerson was named team MVP in track and field and football. As a senior, he led the team in receiving yards and interceptions. Merkerson was All-Conference in track his sophomore, junior and senior years. He was an all-league performer in basketball his senior year. A respected leader at Wingate, Merkerson is an active member of Campus Outreach. Tylan Merkerson is the son of Glynn and Deborah Nelson and Harold Merkerson.
