Tim Boyle enters his ninth season as the men's head lacrosse coach in 2025. Boyle has led the Bulldogs to an NCAA Tournament appearance in five of the last seven seasons, including back-to-back appearances in the national quarterfinals, highlighted by a national semifinal appearance in 2021. He has led Wingate to three SAC Tournament championships and a pair of regular season SAC titles in his tenure with the Bulldogs. Boyle was named the SAC Coach of the Year in 2021 and 2023. Wingate had zero SAC titles and one NCAA Tournament appearance prior to Boyle's arrival. In his 24 years as a collegiate head coach, Boyle is 237-104 overall. He is 89-31 in his eight seasons at Wingate, going 53-9 in league play.
The 2024 season saw the Bulldogs go 11-5 overall, with a 7-2 record in league play. The 'Dogs were ranked in the USILA top 10 all season, while picking up three victories against top-20 opponents. Willie Grieco was named the USILA National Attackman of the Year for the third straight year, while Joe Karnich was named the National LSM of the Year. Grieco was also named the SAC Scholar-Athlete, while Sean Clark was named the SAC Freshman of the Year.
The 2023 season saw the Bulldogs go 12-3 overall with a perfect 9-0 record in league play to capture the regular season SAC title in a conference that had two final four teams including the eventual national champions. The Bulldogs won four games against ranked opponents, including three against top-10 teams. Wingate climbed to as high as number two in the national rankings, while defeating eventual national champion Lenoir-Rhyne on the road and taking down final four participant Limestone at the Crown Classic. Grieco repeated as the SAC Offensive Player of the Year and as the USILA National Attackman of the Year. Peyton Farley was named the Defensive Player of the Year, with Johnny Caponi being named the SAC Specialist of the Year. In total, seven Bulldogs earned All-American recognition in 2022, with Grieco picking up USILA first team honors and Farley and Karnich earning second team accolades. Trent Connolly and Danny Riley were third team honorees, while James Kotcamp and Caponi earned honorable mention recognition.
The 2022 season saw Boyle guide the Bulldogs to a 13-5 record, going 8-2 in SAC play. Wingate earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, rolling to a 20-11 victory at #7 Lindenwood to advance to the national quarterfinals. The Bulldogs were ranked in the USILA top 10 all season, climbing as high as number two, the highest mark in program history. Wingate piled up the honors, with Grieco and Danny Riley both being consensus first team All-Americans. Grieco was named the SAC Player of the Year and SAC Athlete of the Year, while also being named the National Attackman of the Year by the USILA. Riley was named the USILA National Midfielder of the Year.
The 2021 season saw the Bulldogs go 12-3 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, ranking in the USILA top 20 every week of the season. Wingate defeated UIndy in the national quarterefinals, the first NCAA Tournament victory in program history to reach the national semifinals. The Bulldogs piled up the awards in 2021, led by USILA National Lonpole Midfielder of the Year Reese Orman. He was a consensus All-American in 2021, along with Willie Greico, Bobby Padden, Danny Riley and Adam Vodovnik.
The 2020 season saw the Bulldogs jump out to a 4-2 start, which included a 13-7 victory over #10 UIndy. Wingate opened league play with an 18-7 victory over Lincoln Memorial on March 7. That would turn out to be the final game of the season, with all spring sports coming to an abrupt halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Wingate was ranked in every USILA top 20 poll during the 2020 season.
The 2019 season saw the Bulldogs go 13-4 overall and 7-1 in league play to win the first regular season SAC title in program history to go along with a third consecutive SAC Tournament championship. Wingate earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years and third time in program history. The Bulldog defense led the conference in goals-against average in 2019. Wingate had 10 players earn all-conference honors, including 2019 SAC Player of the Year
Alex Llerandi. Wingate had a pair of USILA All-Americans in Llerandi and
Sean Moran, while Llerandi and
RJ Neal both earned USILA/Warrior Scholar All-America accolades.
In his second season at Wingate in 2018, Boyle led the Bulldogs to an 11-5 record, going 7-1 in the SAC to finish in second place in the league standings. Wingate knocked off third-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne 12-9 in the SAC title game to capture a second straight SAC title.
Conor Gronbach was named a third team All-American, while eight Bulldogs earned all-conference accolades, with
Chris Gazzio earning Gronbach as a first team honoree.
Wingate went 13-4 in Boyle's first season in 2017 as the Bulldogs earned their first trip to the NCAA play-offs since 2001 and just the second in program history. Wingate's victory at Queens in the SAC title game gave the 'Dogs their first ever SAC championship. The Bulldogs were ranked number nine nationally in the final regular season poll. Eleven student-athletes made the All-SAC team, led by senior attack
Austin Murphy (’17), who led the league in total points and assists. Murphy finished his brilliant career as Wingate’s all-time leading scorer.
Two Wingate University men’s lacrosse student-athletes were recognized by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association as 2017 NCAA Division II USILA/Nike All-America team members. Bulldog goalkeeper
Will Sheridan (’18) was a second team All-America selection, while attack Llerandi received honorable mention laurels. In the classroom, defender
Anthony Crisera (’17) was recognized as the SAC Scholar-Athlete of the Year award winner.
Boyle came to Wingate after 16 seasons at Dowling College. He held a 148-73 record with the Golden Lions, leading the team to four NCAA tournament appearances and a national title in 2012. Dowling also appeared in the championship game in the 2006 season. Boyle was named the National Coach of the Year by the USILA the same year. He won the award again in 2010 when the Golden Lions appeared in the national semi-finals. Boyle was named the National Coach of the Year for the third time when he led the Golden Lions to the national title in 2012.
In addition to his national awards, Boyle earned East Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors in 2006, 2010, 2012 and 2016. During his tenure at Dowling, Boyle coached 43 All-Americans, six of which went on to play professionally. The Golden Lions had three All-Americans in 2016, including one first team selection and a pair of third team honorees.
Prior to taking over as Dowling’s head coach, Boyle served as the Golden Lions assistant from 1995-2000. Boyle has also served as an assistant coach for the Irish Lacrosse Team which competed in the 2002 World Championships in Perth, Australia. Prior to his coaching experiences, he was a four-year starter and team captain at Oneonta State. He graduated in 1990, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in both U.S. History and European History. He earned his Master’s Degree from Dowling.
Boyle has served on several USILA and NCAA committees in his career. He served on the USILA Poll Committee and All-American Committee from 2001-10. He was on the NCAA Division II Championships Committee from 2012-15, while serving on the NCAA Division II Regional Advisory Committee from 2010-15. The Wantagh, N.Y. native is married to
Jeanne Marie Boyle.
