Biography
Prior to Wingate: Kirkland Mawae swam for head coach Bekah Myers at Dunham High School. He earned three varsity letters and served as team co-captain his senior year. Mawae was awarded MVP his sophomore, junior and senior years along with earning CCSL All-Metro status as a junior. During his senior year, he earned two individual state titles at the Louisiana State championships. Mawae won gold medals in the 100 Backstroke (52.61) and the 200 Individual Medley (1:56.88). He produced more personal best performances in the 100 Breaststroke (58.60) and the 100 Backstroke (51.56) during the 2015 Speedo Championship Series. Kirkland is the son of Kevin and Tracy Mawae. Kirkland’s father is a 16-year NFL veteran and eight-time Pro Bowler, playing for three different NFL teams during his career (Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets and Tennessee Titans).
