Biography

2013: Redshirted in 2013 following knee injury during junior season.

2012: Appeared in 10 matches during her junior year before suffering season-ending knee surgery in match against Tusculum...Averaged 2.60 kills and 3.72 digs per set...Added 14 blocks and eight aces...Had seven kills and eight digs against UNC Pembroke, hitting .375...Hit .471 with eight kills against Nova Southeastern, adding nine digs...Piled up 14 kills and 20 digs at USC Aiken, while registering nine kills and 16 digs against #15 Flagler. 

2011: Earned first team All-SAC and All-Region honors during her sophomore year...Also earned All-National honors from COBRA Magazine...Led the Bulldogs and finished third in the SAC with 3.32 kills per set to go along with 1.92 digs and 0.41 blocks per set...Had double-digit kills 19 times on the year, while notching four double-doubles...Had 18 kills and a .500 hitting percentage in the 3-1 win over Flagler...Had 13 kills in the win at LMU, while notching 14 kills and three blocks against Brevard...Posted 11 kills and 11 digs at Newberry, followed by a 13-kill, 6-dig, 3-block effort at Catawba...Had 16 kills against Carson-Newman, hitting .464 on the night...Piled up 18 kills and eight digs in the SAC quarterfinal win over Carson-Newman, hitting .326...Had 12 kills and 19 digs in the SAC title win over Catawba...Had 15 kills and nine digs against Lees-McRae in the regional quarterfinal win...Piled up 15 kills and 14 digs in the regional semifinal win over Catawba, hitting .433...Posted 17 kills and 15 digs in the regional title match.

2010: Made a big impact during her freshman season, ranking second on the team with 2.96 kills and 2.95 digs per set...Earned All-SAC Freshman honors, while also earning All-Region and All-National team honors from COBRA Magazine...Also earned All-Tournament honors at the Food Lion SAC Tournament and the NCAA Southeast Regionals...Had double-digit kills 14 times in 2010, while collecting eight double-doubles...Had 14 kills and seven digs in Wingate’s key home victory over Flagler...First career double-double came against Newberry, notching 10 kills and 12 digs...Posted 13 kills and 14 digs in the win at LMU, while piling up 16 kills and 14 digs in the home victory over Tusculum...Had 14 kills and 11 digs in the SAC Tournament victory over Newberry...Turned in a career-high 17 kills to go along with 15 digs in the SAC championship match against Tusculum...Piled up 12 kills and a career-best 18 digs in the regional semifinal win over Montevallo.

Personal: Cory McGowan was the kill leader and captain each of the past two seasons at Penn Hills (Pa.) High School. A first team All-WPIAL selection, McGowan played club volleyball for Odyssey VBC as a junior. She played for Pittsburgh Elite in 2009. She was the senior class president, secretary of the Spanish Club and a high honor roll student. McGowan is also a third degree black belt in tang so do.

Why Cory chose Wingate: There were a lot of opportunities. Also, coach took me to Chick-Fil-A, which pretty much sealed the deal.

Coach Collier: “Cory will be returning as a fifth-year redshirt senior and she is very ready to be a motivated leader for our team this year. We are all proud of her for working so hard with her comeback after suffering such a serious knee injury in her junior year. We expect her to be back as strong and as competitive as ever, and she will certainly be a key factor as a hitter and as an all-around player. She played well in the spring but is now even stronger and more prepared, so it will be exciting to see."
