Wingate University junior Ryan Forbes (Charlotte, N.C.) earned South Atlantic Conference men’s tennis Player of the Week honors on Monday. Forbes went undefeated on the week, leading the Bulldogs to three victories which included two road wins and a conference victory. The 32nd-ranked Bulldogs are 8-3 overall and 2-0 in the SAC. Wingate opened its week with a 9-0 win against Erskine. The Bulldogs followed with a 6-3 win at Newberry, while registering a 5-4 victory at Limestone Sunday.
Forbes won all three of his singles matches at the number five singles spot. He won 6-1, 6-0 at Erskine. Forbes cruised to a 6-1, 6-3 victory at Newberry. He capped his week by winning the clincher at Limestone. Forbes lost the opening set 6-7, but rallied for 6-2, 6-2 wins in the final two sets to clinch the Wingate victory.
Forbes teamed with freshman Kennedy Cancelado (Miami Springs, Fla.) for three victories in number two doubles. The two won 8-3 against Erskine, while winning 9-7 at Newberry. Forbes and Cancelado finished their week with a 9-7 win at Limestone.
On the season, Forbes is 7-1 in singles action. He holds an 8-2 record in doubles play for the Bulldogs. Wingate is back in action Wednesday, taking on Georgia College. The Bulldogs travel to Augusta State Thursday for a 12 p.m. start.
