Wingate redshirt sophomore quarterback Kyle Johnson (Hickory, N.C.) led the Bulldogs to their fifth win of the season Saturday afternoon at Brevard, completing 14-of-20 passes for 179 yards in the 43-21 SAC win at Brevard.
The win puts the Bulldogs 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the SAC. Johnson threw for a career-high tying three touchdowns on Saturday, while also running for a touchdown. His second quarter rushing touchdown put the ‘Dogs on top 19-14, while a six-yard TD pass to Jiwan Funderburk gave the Bulldogs a 26-14 halftime lead.
Johnson hit Patrick Derenda for a nine-yard touchdown in the third quarter, while an 11-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Ellington put Wingate on top 40-21 early in the fourth quarter.
Johnson is 126-for-215 this season, throwing for 1,342 yards and 11 touchdowns. He ranks third in the SAC with 191.7 passing yard per game, while also ranking third with his 58.6 percent completion percentage.
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, hosting Tusculum at 1:30 p.m. on Homecoming Saturday at Irwin Belk Stadium.
