Mulholland hat trick leads Wingate to 8-0 win over Tornados

Wingate University junior midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) notched his second hat trick in as many matches, as the Bulldogs blanked Brevard College 8-0 in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at the WU Soccer Complex.

An All-American last season, Mulholland has six goals this week. He has a team-best 10 goals this year. With the victory, Wingate improves to 8-1 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. Brevard falls to 1-12 overall and 0-5 in the SAC.

Wingate scored four goals in each half. In the first frame, junior forward Jamie McKenna  (Blackpool, England) scored two goals in 55 seconds to put the hosts up 2-0. McKenna has five goals for the 2009 campaign.

Mulholland scored on a header in the 27th minute to give Wingate a 3-0 lead. Bulldog sophomore Felippe Imperatriz  (Sao Paulo, Brazil) provided Mulholland the assist on a corner kick. Mulholland finished the first half scoring in the 36th minute on an assist from junior forward Rory Green  (Nottingham, England).

Bulldog sophomore midfielder Paul Gallagher (Strabane, Northern Ireland) scored twice in the second half. Gallagher’s first score was an unassisted tally in the 48th minute. After Mulholland added his final tally three minutes later, Gallagher scored again on assists from Mulholland and Imperatriz at the 52:00 mark.

Wingate senior forward Junior Nyemb (Douala, Cameroon) completed the scoring in the 65th minute. The ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America® candidate was assisted on the play by freshman midfielder Brian Mazhari (Charlotte, N.C.). Both Nyemb and McKenna have five goals each this season.

Bulldog junior goalkeeper Joey Calandra  (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) played the first half, while freshman netminder Leo Kurata(Sao Paulo, Brazil) played the second stanza. Kurata had one save. For Brevard, freshman goalkeeper Jack Shaw (Simpsonville, S.C.) played 52 minutes. Shaw allowed seven goals and recorded one save. Tornado sophomore Thomas Kombol (Kannapolis, N.C.) played the final 38 minutes between the pipes. Kombol surrendered one goal and notched two saves.

Both teams step out of the SAC fray for their next contests. Wingate hosts Chowan University Wednesday night at 7 p.m. Brevard returns home to face Clayton State (Ga.) University Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m.
