Bulldogs fall 2-0 at Catawba

Box Score

Salisbury, N.C.----
Catawba scored a goal in each half and shutout visiting Wingate 2-0 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 7-3-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 7-1-3 and 0-1-1.

Freshman Katie Gair (Milton, Ontario) gave Catawba the early advantage on a header in the 12th minute. Gair scored the header off a 40-yard free kick into the box by Laela Ghorbani (Highlands Ranch, Colo.).

That goal looked to be the lone tally of the night until freshman Maria Borland (Hagerstown, Md.) took a pass from her sister, Stephanie Borland (Hagerstown, Md.), down the left side of box. She slotted a shot under Wingate keeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta, CANADA) from a tight angle with just under 12 minutes left to clinch the win.

Wingate nearly tied the contest in the second half with several chances. In the 69th minute, Liz Kinney (Moore, SC) had a shot that Catawba keeper Lindsay Webster (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton HS) barely kept out of the goal and Kelly Moldenhauer fed a shot just wide in the 75th minute. Three minutes later Borland iced the issue.

Webster had seven saves in posting her second shutout of the season for the Lady Indians. Boucher had four saves for the Bulldogs. Catawba held an 11-10 edge in shot and took five corners to none for Wingate.
