Wingate tops Coker 8-0 Thursday night

Hartsville, S.C.----The Wingate University women’s soccer team continued its high-scoring ways Thursday night, picking up an 8-0 NCAA Division II victory over host Coker College Thursday night at the Coker Soccer Field.

Bulldog sophomore forward Liz Kinney (Moore, S.C.) earned her second career hat trick, tallying three goals for the victors. Wingate junior forward Kerstin Williams (Summerville, S.C.) added two goals for the visiting Bulldogs (2-0 overall). With the loss, Coker falls to 0-3 overall. The Cobras have lost 14 matches in a row, dating to last season.

The Bulldogs scored four goals in the first 30 minutes of the contest. Senior Jordan Mayer (Williamsburg, Va.) started the scoring, putting a deflected shot into the back of the nets in the 10th minute.

Williams scored her first goal five minutes later, taking advantage of assists from sophomores Kelsey McCormick (Hockessin, Del.) and Megan Mastalerz (Elkridge, Md.). Kinney got on the board in the 21st minute, taking a cross from Mayer to make the score 3-0 Bulldogs.

McCormick finished the opening half-hour with an unassisted goal from short range. Kinney concluded the first half scoring in the 44th minute, converting a one-timer in the box. Kinney was assisted by freshman forward Chloe’ Donaldson (Eagle Springs, N.C.).

Williams scored on a break-away in the 57th minute to put the Bulldogs up by a 6-0 margin. The All-South Atlantic Conference performer has five goals in two matches this season.

Donaldson scored her first career goal with 35 seconds remaining in the contest to wrap up the offensive fireworks for the Bulldogs. Wingate outshot Coker 29-1, including a 23-1 advantage in shots on goal.

Wingate freshmen goalkeepers Catie Avery (East Hampton, Conn.) and Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) shared the shutout. Avery started the match, playing the first half. She faced one shot and recorded one save. Boucher manned the fort in the second half. Coker junior goalkeeper Margaret McCoy (Columbia, S.C.) went the distance for the hosts. She allowed eight goals and notched 15 saves in 90 minutes.
