Wingate, N.C.----Carson-Newman junior forward
Trenna Howell (Oak Ridge, Tenn.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Eagles of Carson-Newman College past Wingate University 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at the WU Soccer Complex. The Eagles improve to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. The Bulldogs lose for the first time since the season opener, falling to 7-2-3 overall and 4-1-1 in the conference.
Howell was able to take advantage of a misplay by the Wingate defense 33:06 into the first half, gaining control and beating the goalkeeper to put the Eagles on top 1-0.
Freshman defender Maleya Garrison (Hendersonville, Tenn.) found Howell behind the defense with 7:22 remaining in the second half to give Carson-Newman a 2-0 advantage.
The Bulldogs got on the board with 2:31 remaining in regulation, when sophomore defender Kelly Moldenhauer (Charlotte, N.C.) scored on a penalty kick.
The Bulldogs outshot Carson-Newman 16-7 on the day, while holding a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Tompkins (Franklin, Wis.) collected four saves for the Eagles. Sophomore Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) had a pair of saves for Wingate.
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, Oct. 23, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne at 4 p.m. Carson-Newman travels to Brevard Wednesday at 4 p.m.
