Lima scores twice as ‘Dogs down Bears for ninth straight win

Wingate University sophomore forward Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored a pair of goals as the Bulldogs defeated the Bears of Lenoir-Rhyne University 3-1 Saturday night in South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer action. Wingate wins its ninth straight match, improving to 12-2 overall and 6-1 in the SAC. Lenoir-Rhyne falls to 8-7 overall and 3-4 in the conference.

Wingate and Carson-Newman are tied at the top of the SAC standings, both at 6-1 in conference play. The Bulldogs defeated the Eagles 6-0 last weekend. Wingate has outscored its opponents 35-6 in the nine-match winning streak.

Senior midfielder Jack Vundum (Birmingham, England) got the scoring started 23:46 into the match, getting a cross from junior midfielder Felippe Imperatriz (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and heading home his sixth goal of the season.

Lima gave the Bulldogs a two-goal lead 1:52 before halftime, lining one in from 10 yards out to make it 2-0. Junior midfielder Fabricio Barancoski (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and senior midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) assisted on the goal.

The Bears had the immediate response, scoring 56 seconds later to cut the Wingate lead in half. Freshman defender Sean Rogers (Dublin, Ireland) headed home his sixth goal of the year. A corner kick from junior midfielder Jordan Holmes (Southport, England) got the play started, while freshman forward Chibuzo Nwosu (Macon, Ga.) deflected it to Rogers.

The Bulldogs regained a two-goal advantage 24:14 into the second half when Lima lined one in from outside the box for his eighth goal of the season.

Lenoir-Rhyne had a chance to cut into the lead a minute later, but a penalty kick from junior forward Nicky Matthews (Bradford, England) sailed high.

The Bulldogs outshot the Bears 13-9 on the night, while holding a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) collected four saves for the Bulldogs. Senior goalkeeper Tom Heath (Solihull, England) had four saves for the Bears.

Wingate returns to action Wednesday, hosting Anderson University at 7 p.m. Lenoir-Rhyne will host Catawba College Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
