Lima's hat trick helps Wingate top Newberry 8-0 Wednesday night

Wingate University sophomore forward Gui Lima recorded a hat trick to help the Bulldogs score a season-high eight goals in an 8-0 South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer victory over Newberry College Wednesday night at the WU Soccer Complex. Wingate is 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the SAC. Newberry is 1-7-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the SAC.

Lima entered the contest with two career goals. On Wednesday night, he scored one goal in the first half and two in the second half to help the Bulldogs put the match on ice. Wingate senior forward Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) opened the scoring in the 19th minute, taking a cross from senior defender Stephen Kehoe (Newry, Ireland) and scoring his team-best eighth goal of the season.

Wingate senior midfielder Jack Vundum (Birmingham, England) converted a penalty kick five minutes later to give the host Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage. A Vundum cross helped Lima score his first goal at 52:01, allowing Wingate to take a 3-0 lead early in the second half.

Bulldog freshman Gui Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored his first career goal in the 62nd minute to make the score 4-0. Lima scored back-to-back goals to give the hosts a 6-0 edge six minutes later. Senior All-American midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) assisted on the first goal at 66:24, while McKenna and Mulholland helped Lima score the second goal at 67:50.

The Bulldogs added two goals in the waning moments to account for the final margin. Freshman defender Keith Pittman (Matthews, N.C.) scored his first career goal at 75:15 on a rebound. Junior midfielder Fabricio Barancoski (Sao Paulo, Brazil) finished the scoring at 88:21 on an assist from senior goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.).

Wingate had 34 shots, compared to three shots for Newberry. The Bulldogs had 17 shots on goal, compared to one for the Wolves. Calandra recorded his 14th career shutout. The Bishop England product had one save. Newberry goalie Joel Johnson (Sangre Grande, Trinidad & Tobago) took the loss. In 75-plus minutes, Johnson surrendered seven goals and posted eight saves.
