Newberry wins Hargett Memorial; Wingate's A. Denton earns All-Tourney spot

Charlotte, N.C.----The Newberry College women’s golf team led wire-to-wire, claiming its second lifetime title in the 10th annual J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate women’s golf tournament at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation. The Newberry scarlet-and-gray also won the 2005 Hargett Memorial crown.

Newberry shot 317 Tuesday to go with a Monday 320 to finish at 637, 17 strokes better than second place UNC Pembroke (654). Newberry has won five tournaments this season. Carson-Newman finished third (664), while host Wingate claimed the fourth spot (673). Twelve teams were represented in this year’s event.

On the individual charts, Newberry sophomore Maria Luz Besio (Buenos Aires, Argentina) claimed her second consecutive medalist trophy by winning a play-off over freshman teammate Lisa Brandl (Nuremberg, Germany). Besio also won the 2009 Hargett event. Her victory marks the fourth time a Newberry player has won the Hargett gold medal (and third year in a row). Eva Cormann (2005) and Franziska Blum (2008) also took the Hargett hardware back to South Carolina.

Besio shot 78 Monday and 77 Tuesday to finish at 155. Brandl had Tuesday’s best round with a one-over-par 73. She carded 82 Monday on her way to 155. Besio won the scorecard play-off by virtue of a Tuesday birdie on the ninth hole (par 4, 364 yards).

Bulldog senior Allie Osberg (Chester Springs, Pa.) moved up the charts in her final home appearance, tying for 12th place with a 165. She added an 80 Tuesday to go with her first-day 85. Wingate junior Anna Lee Croom (Asheboro, N.C.) tied for 25th place at 171 (82-89).
