Bulldogs finish third in SAC Tournament; Denton earns All-Tourney honors

Hendersonville, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s golf team finished third in the 2010 Food Lion SAC women’s golf tournament, which concluded Tuesday afternoon. The Bulldogs shot a final round 341 to finish with a final three-round total of 984. Junior Ashley Denton (Wendell, N.C.) earned Second Team All-Tournament honors, finishing seventh overall. Newberry College won the tournament by 18 shots with a final score of 923. Carson-Newman was second at 941.

Denton shot 79 and 75 in her first two rounds, to go along with a final round 80 to earn All-Tournament honors. Junior Anna Lee Croom (Asheboro, N.C.) shot a final round 82, along with rounds of 81 and 83 to finish in a tie for 16th. Senior Allie Osberg (Chester Springs, Pa.) shot a final round 87 to go with rounds of 79 and 83 to finish in a tie for 20th.

Junior Andrea Velasquez (Anaco, Venezuela) finished with a 92 on Tuesday, after rounds of 83 and 80 to finish tied for 28th.

Newberry’s 923 is a SAC record. The scarlet-and-gray were led by overall champion Maria Luz Besio who shot rounds of 74, 76 and 75. Josefine Mensner of Newberry finished second, shooting rounds of 78, 72 and 78.
