Mulholland and McKenna lead Wingate to 2-0 victory over Lander

BOX SCORE

Wingate, N.C.----
Wingate University senior forward Jamie McKenna (Blackpool, England) and senior midfielder Luke Mulholland (Preston, England) scored goals to lead the Bulldogs to 2-0 NCAA Division II men’s soccer victory over Lander University Wednesday night at the WU Soccer Complex.

Wingate is 4-2 overall, while Lander falls to 2-4 overall. The Bulldogs return to South Atlantic Conference play Saturday, visiting rival Tusculum College for a 4 p.m. contest. Lander hosts North Georgia College & State University Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in a Peach Belt Conference encounter.

The Bulldogs scored both goals in the first half. In the 12th minute, McKenna took a cross from junior midfielder Felippe Imperatriz (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and beat Lander junior goalkeeper Scott Playle (Fife, Scotland) from 15 yards out. McKenna leads the Bulldogs with five goals this season.

Imperatriz helped on the second goal as well, finding Mulholland outside the box in the upper corner. The Bulldog All-American scored his first goal of the season at the 31:12 mark of the opening frame.

Wingate outshot Lander 20-3, including a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal. The Bulldogs had two goals disallowed in the second half due to two offside infractions. McKenna had six shots, while Mulholland, Imperatriz and freshman defender Gui Andrade (Sao Paulo, Brazil) had three attempts each.

Bulldog senior goalkeeper Joey Calandra (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) recorded his 12th career shutout. In 90 minutes, Calandra posted two saves. Playle stayed busy, notching eight saves while also going the distance. He allowed both Wingate goals.
