Anna Hilton (Hickory, N.C.) racked up a career-high 17 kills to lead the Bulldogs past Coker College on day two of the 2010 Carolinas Challenge hosted by Lees-McRae College. Wingate won by scores of 25-15, 25-13 and 25-17 to improve to 2-0 on the season. The Bulldogs are now 102-6 overall since the start of the 2007 season. Coker falls to 0-3 on the year.
Hilton had 17 kills while hitting .625 to go along with eight digs, two blocks and an ace. Junior setter
Liz Willis (Raleigh, N.C.) had 20 assists, six kills and four digs for the Bulldogs. Sophomore outside hitter
Katie Handy (Palos Verdes, Calif.) had five kills, five digs and five aces for Wingate, while freshman middle blocker
Allison Rickher (Matthews, N.C.) also had five kills.
Four different players had four kills for the Cobras. Junior middle hitter
Cynallhia Indriago (Columbia, S.C.) had four kills and a team-best 10 digs for Coker. Sophomore setter
Molly Bookhart (Orangeburg, S.C.) had 18 assists and three digs.
Wingate used a 5-0 run to take a 9-3 lead in the first set, capped by kills from Willis and freshman outside hitter
Cory McGowan (Pittsburgh, Pa.). Back-to-back kills from Hilton made it 17-10. The Cobras would get no closer than six the rest of the way, with Rickher finishing the first set with a kill.
Wingate trailed 4-1 in the second set after a kill from sophomore outside hitter
Jordan Hancock (Mount Pleasant, S.C.). Handy stepped back to serve and would help the Bulldogs take an 8-4 lead, notching three aces in the run. A kill from Indriago cut the Wingate lead to two at 10-8. An ace from Lang put Wingate on top by six. The Bulldogs would finish the set on a 7-0 run, with Handy serving the final six points while notching another ace.
Wingate used a 7-0 run to take a 20-13 lead in the final set. Rickher got it started with a kill, while Handy finished it with a pair of kills. A kill from Hilton put the ‘Dogs on top 24-16. Freshman outside hitter
Kayla Osterhus (Matthews, N.C.) finished the match with a kill.
Wingate hit .274 for the match, compiling 44 kills against 15 errors in 106 attacks. Coker hit .025 with 19 kills and 17 errors in 81 attacks. Wingate had 12 aces, led by Handy with five and Lang with three.
The Bulldogs will take on Flagler College Saturday at 1 p.m. The 22nd-ranked Saints defeated Wingate in the 2009 NCAA Regional Finals. The Bulldogs beat Flagler 3-2 in the regular season in 2009, after falling behind 2-0.
