Adams leads ‘Dogs to impressive 5-0 win over Tusculum

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University senior forward Kelly Adams (Matthews, N.C.) had a goal and three assists to lead the Bulldogs to a dominant 5-0 victory over visiting Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Tuesday night. The Bulldogs notch their eighth straight win and fourth consecutive shutout, improving to 9-2 overall and 4-0 in the SAC. Tusculum sees its five-game winning streak snapped, falling to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the SAC.

The Bulldogs did all of their damage in the second half, after out-shooting Tusculum 7-4 in the opening frame. Senior defender Stefanie Schroeder (Dallas, Texas) got the scoring started, netting her first goal of the year 6:19 into the second half. Schroeder’s first goal as a Bulldog came via a cross from Adams.
 
Freshman forward AJ Lightbody (Matthews, N.C.) gave the ‘Dogs a 2-0 lead six minutes later, lining in a perfect cross from Adams in the corner. Adams was on the receiving end of a Lightbody pass less than three minutes later, netting her second goal of the year to make it 3-0.
 
The ‘Dogs took a four-goal lead with 22:07 remaining in the half, as senior forward Hannah Holsclaw (Matthews, N.C.) headed home a corner kick from Adams to make the tally 4-0 Wingate.
 
Wingate senior midfielder Megan Mastalerz (Elkridge, Md.) capped the scoring on the night with 14 minutes remaining in the contest. Sophomore defender Chandler Murphy (Pawleys Island, S.C.) got behind the defense and then sent a cross to Mastalerz. Junior forward Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario) re-directed the cross right to the foot of Mastalerz, who scored her second goal of the season to make the final score 5-0.
 
The Bulldogs out-shot Tusculum 19-9 on the night, holding a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Freshman Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) collected four saves to preserve the shutout for the Bulldogs. Freshman goalkeeper Marissa Williams (Canton, Mich.) had five saves for the Pioneers.
 
Wingate returns to action Saturday, traveling to Carson-Newman College for a 4 p.m. start. Tusculum travels to Young Harris College Thursday for a 3 p.m. start.
