Box Score
Salisbury, N.C.----Wingate University redshirt senior quarterback
Cody Haffly (Locust Grove, Ga.) completed 20-of-31 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns as the Bulldogs earned a wild 51-41 South Atlantic Conference victory over host Catawba College Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The two teams combined for 920 yards total offense.
With the victory, the Bulldogs improve to 5-3 overall and 4-1 in the SAC. With Mars Hill’s 51-31 setback to Lenoir-Rhyne, three teams have one SAC loss each. The Catawba Indians fall to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in the SAC. Wingate’s 51 points are the second-most for the modern-day Bulldogs in the Catawba series. Wingate defeated host Catawba 61-55 on Nov. 6, 1993.
Haffly used seven different receivers Saturday. Bulldog junior wide receiver
Chris Bowden (Forsyth, Ga.) caught seven passes for 90 yards and two touchdowns. Bowden has 24 career TD grabs, moving him to third on Wingate’s lifetime touchdown reception list.
Wingate freshman running back
Nestor Lantigua (Wellington, Fla.) scored his first career rushing touchdown. He carried five times for 49 yards and one score. In addition, Lantigua returned four kick-offs for 92 yards (23.0 yards per return). Classmate
Josh Covington (Charlotte, N.C.) rushed 12 times for 50 yards. Collectively, the Bulldogs rushed 34 times for 128 yards and one score.
Bulldog senior walk-on place kicker
Paul Grammaticopoulos (Paris, France) had the biggest day of his eight-game football career. The Wingate soccer standout hit three-of-three field goals (26, 19, 38) and averaged 62.4 yards on 10 kick-offs. The Bulldogs won the field position battle by 14 yards (W47 to C33).
Wingate senior linebacker
Clayton Hazeltine (Nokomis, Fla.) and redshirt junior linebacker
Jared Seate (Charlotte, N.C.) combined for 25 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss and one sack. Both Hazeltine and Seate had eight solo stops each. Bulldog redshirt junior defensive back
Warren Brown (Miami, Fla.) had 10 tackles and a blocked field goal.
Brown’s blocked field goal broke a 7-7 tie, thanks to an 80-yard missed field goal return by junior defensive back
Jarvis Smith (Godfrey, Ill.). The extra point by Wingate redshirt junior place kicker
Matthew Sierk (Saluda, N.C.) put the visiting Bulldogs up 14-7 with 6:41 to play in the first quarter.
Haffly found Bowden for six points twice in the first half (11 yards, nine yards). The second connection gave Wingate a 34-24 lead with 5:17 remaining in the opening stanza. After Catawba turned the ball over on downs, Grammaticopoulos hit his first field goal of the afternoon (26 yards) to give Wingate a 37-24 lead with nine seconds to go before intermission.
Grammaticopoulos and Catawba senior placekicker
Thomas Trexler (Wilmington, N.C.) traded field goals to open the third quarter scoring. A Catawba fumble led to the second of Grammaticopoulos’ three field goals. After the Trexler triple, Haffly and company marched 80 yards in six plays to allow Lantigua to find pay dirt from three yards at the 1:36 mark. The 80-yard drive was the longest for either team Saturday. Haffly added the two-point conversion run to give Wingate a 48-27 lead entering the final stanza.
Catawba junior quarterback
Jacob Charest (Charlotte, N.C.) scored two of his three one-yard touchdowns in the fourth quarter. A 38-yard field goal from Grammaticopoulos was sandwiched between the two Charest QB sneaks. A transfer from the University of Illinois, Charest completed 35-of-58 passes for 384 yards and one touchdown Saturday. He also rushed 13 times for 52 yards and three scores.
Eleven different Catawba Indians caught passes from Charest, led by senior wide receiver
Eric Morman (Rockingham, N.C.), who corralled nine catches for 93 yards and one score. Sophomore wide receiver
Nate Charest (Charlotte, N.C.) caught eight passes for a game-high 146 yards from his brother.
Catawba senior running back
Josh Wright (Raeford, N.C.) ran the ball 11 times for 46 yards and one touchdown. He also caught six passes for 35 yards. Wright’s eight-yard TD scamper in the first quarter (8:44) tied the contest at 7-7. After Wingate fumbled on the next play from scrimmage, the Catawba Indians moved down the field for Trexler’s ill-fated field goal attempt from 42 yards.
Catawba senior linebacker
Lakeem Perry (Louisburg, N.C.) had 12 tackles and one fumble recovery. Senior defensive back
Casey Hall (Concord, N.C.) had eight tackles and two forced fumbles. Freshman defensive lineman
CJ Barksdale (Simpsonville, S.C.) had six tackles, two tackles for loss, one quarterback sack and one QB hurry.
Wingate utilized the bend-but-don’t-break policy, holding Catawba to four-of-15 third-down conversions. The Indians were successful on four-of-six fourth down conversions, with all four successful attempts coming in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs had seven quarterback hurries, with redshirt senior defensive end
Jack Taylor (Keystone Heights, Fla.) and redshirt freshman defensive lineman
Nick Napolitano (Shallotte, N.C.) recording two each.
Wingate continues its SAC road swing next Saturday, visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University (4-3, 3-1 SAC) for a 2 p.m. contest. Catawba also pounds the pavement next week, traveling to Tigerville, S.C. for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference encounter with North Greenville University.
