Wingate men and women finish 12th at NCAA Regionals

The Wingate University men’s and women’s cross country teams both notched 12th place finishes at the 2011 NCAA Southeast Regionals Saturday morning at McAlpine Park. The men’s field included 24 teams, while 26 teams competed in the women’s race.
 
On the men’s side, Binyam Belachew was the top finisher for the Bulldogs, finishing 41st with a time of 33:15. Andrew Smith finished 52nd with a time of 33:32. Steve Hammond’s time of 33:48 was good for a 63rd place finish. Hillary Maiyo finished 83rd at 34:29, while James Lawson was 89th with a time of 34:39.
 
Keeley Wood notched a top 10 finish on the women’s side, finishing ninth with a time of 22:25. Melanie Wollenberg finished with a time of 24:21, good for 71st place. Taylor Varnadoe finished three spots behind Wollenberg. Tiana Barnes finished one second behind Wollenberg and Varnadoe, good for a 76th place finish. Austin Hoffman finished in 25:22, placing 110th for the Bulldogs.
 
Queens won the men’s race, followed by Mount Olive and King. Mars Hill finished fourth, while UNC Pembroke rounded out the top five on the men’s side. Queens also won the women’s race, followed by Montevallo and Mount Olive. King and Anderson rounded out the top five teams on the women’s side.
