Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University freshman forward
AJ Lightbody (Matthews, N.C.) scored 5:41 into overtime to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 victory over Armstrong in NCAA Division II women’s soccer action Wednesday afternoon. Wingate wins its fourth straight contest, improving to 5-2 overall. The Pirates fall to 4-2 on the season.
Wingate got on the board with less than four minutes remaining in the opening half, when junior defender
Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario) ripped one into the opposite corner from 18 yards out to give the ‘Dogs a 1-0 lead, giving Forza a pair of goals this season.
That would be all of the scoring in the opening half. Each team took four shots in the first half, while each team also had a pair of shots on goal in the opening frame.
The Pirates tied the contest 11:46 into the second half, when sophomore midfielder
Andye Dawson (Senoia, Ga.) scored her first goal of the season just outside of the box to make it 1-1. Freshman midfielder
Mary Margaret Davis (Savannah, Ga.) had the assist on the play.
That would be all of the scoring in regulation. The Bulldogs struck for the game-winner just past the midway point of the first overtime. Freshman midfielder
Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) beat her defender and put a ball right in front of the goal, deflecting off the Armstrong goalkeeper. Lightbody was there, netting her third goal of the season to give the Bulldogs the dramatic victory.
The Bulldogs held a 12-10 advantage in shots on the afternoon, including a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. Armstrong had four corner kicks on the day, compared to Wingate’s three. Freshman goalkeeper
Ashlyn Hardie (Summerfield, N.C.) notched a save to preserve the win for the Bulldogs. Junior
Meghan Mayville (Savannah, Ga.) had a pair of saves for the Pirates.
The Bulldogs are back in action Monday, hosting UNC Pembroke at 7 p.m. Armstrong hosts Clayton State Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
