Mullen and #18 Mars Hill take 2-0 victory at Wingate Saturday

Box Score Wingate, N.C.----Mars Hill College sophomore midfielder Alex Mullen (Adelaide, Australia) scored two second-half goals seven minutes apart to lead the visiting Lions to a 2-0 South Atlantic Conference men’s soccer victory over Wingate University Saturday night at the WU Soccer Complex.
 
The number 18 team in the NSCAA/Continental Tire NCAA Division II top 25 rankings, Mars Hill improves to 12-2-1 overall and 7-1 in the SAC. The Lions clinch the 2012 SAC regular season title with the victory. Wingate drops to 9-4 overall and 5-3 in the SAC. The Bulldogs host Limestone College Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
 
Lion junior midfielder Felipe Ferraro (Sao Paulo, Brazil) assisted Mullen on both goals. In the 57th minute, a Ferrarro corner kick found Mullen at the top of the box. Mullen sent a grounder through the box for his first goal of the evening.
 
Mullen tallied his seventh goal of the season in the 64th minute. He took a centering pass from a Ferraro corner kick and scored from closer range. Mullen made the most of his opportunities, as he took only three shots Saturday night.
 
The Bulldogs had chances, as they matched their mountain guests with 14 shots. Six of Mars Hill’s 14 shots were on goal, while four of Wingate’s 14 attempts fit the same category. Wingate senior forward Gui Lima (Sao Paulo, Brazil) took seven shots with two on goal. Freshman defender Liam Gillesphey (Newcastle, England) recorded three shots with one on goal. Junior forward Fabio Azeredo (Sao Paulo, Brazil) took Wingate’s other shot on goal.
 
Mars Hill senior goalkeeper Zac Scott (Pittsboro, N.C.) earned the shutout victory, posting four saves. Wingate sophomore goalkeeper Daniel DeGraff (Statesville, N.C.) matched Scott with four saves. Both keepers played 90 minutes Saturday.
