Bulldogs down Pioneers 3-2 for 10th straight win

Wingate, N.C.----Wingate University freshman midfielder Danielle Cremmen (Acton, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead the Bulldogs past the visiting Pioneers of Tusculum College 3-2 in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon. Wingate wins its 10th straight match, finishing the regular season at 13-1-1 overall and 8-1 in the SAC, good for a second place finish in the league standings. Tusculum falls to 11-3-2 overall and 6-2-1 in the conference.

Cremmen got the Bulldogs on the board early, netting her third goal of the year 2:29 into the opening half, getting a perfect cross from sophomore forward Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) on the far post.

Tusculum tied it in the 17th minute when freshman midfielder Gabrielle Whitt (Mason, Ohio) headed in a corner from junior defender Amy Morford (Bersailles, Ky.) to make it 1-1.

Montgomery put the Bulldogs back on top 7:55 into the second half, ripping a low liner through the box off a feed from sophomore midfielder Katie Simpson (Indian Trail, N.C.) to make it 2-1. Montgomery leads the nation with 18 goals, and has registered a point in each of her last nine matches.

Cremmen gave the Bulldogs some insurance with 13:07 remaining in regulation, scoring her second goal of the day to make it 3-1. Simpson started the play with a lead pass, while Montgomery re-directed it in front of the net for Cremmen, who lined it into the corner.

Tusculum made it a one-goal game with just under four minutes remaining when senior forward Kim Brown (Scarborough, Ontario) took a cross from freshman defender Kim Lewis (Willingboro, N.J.) and netted her fifth goal of the year to make it 3-2.

Tusculum out-shot Wingate 12-10 on the day, holding a slim 7-6 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) had five saves to preserve the Wingate victory. Sophomore Marissa Williams (Canton, Mich.) had three saves for the Pioneers.

Both teams return to action Tuesday in the opening round of the Food Lion SAC Tournament. Both teams will host contests on Tuesday. The brackets will be released on Sunday.
