Brevard, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs won their 12th straight match Tuesday night, winning 3-1 at Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action. Wingate won by scores of 25-19, 25-12, 20-25 and 25-19 to improve to 21-2 overall and 11-2 in the SAC. Brevard falls to 10-14 overall and 1-12 in the conference.
Sophomore outside hitter
Susie Murach (Burke, Va.) had 13 kills to lead the Wingate attack, hitting .310 on the night. Redshirt junior right-side hitter
Anna Hilton (Hickory, N.C.) added 11 kills, seven digs and seven assists, while sophomore middle blocker
Lexi Potter (North Liberty, Iowa) had nine kills and four blocks, hitting .538 in three sets of action. Redshirt sophomore setter
Alison Cooke (Davidson, N.C.) had 23 assists, four digs, four blocks and three kills, while freshman
Iris Brewer (Cincinnati, Ohio) handed out 17 assists. Sophomore libero
Stephanie Tassone (Chicago, Ill.) collected 19 digs.
“We wanted to come up to Brevard and make some progress, and we were able to that,” head coach
Shelton Collier says. “In three of the sets we hit in the mid to high .300’s as a team, which is important. We had some very strong individual hitting percentages as well. We have our next three matches at home, and our players are looking forward to our final regular season home matches.”
Kills from Murach and Hilton put the Bulldogs on top 12-10 in the opening set. A kill from
Fatima Gharachorloo trimmed the lead to one at 16-15. A kill from Potter, followed by back-to-back kills from Murach made it 19-15. A
Kortney Conner kill and Gharachorloo ace got the Tornados back within two at 21-19. The Bulldogs scored the last four points to take the set. Stumpff started the spurt with a kill, while kills from Potter and Hilton capped the opening frame.
Wingate dominated the second set, jumping out to a 15-3 lead. Murach had three kills in the flurry, while Potter added two kills. A pair of Murach kills, along with a Brevard error gave Wingate a 24-12 lead, while an ace from junior middle blocker
Allison Rickher (Matthews, N.C.) capped the second set. Wingate hit .333 in the second frame, holding the Tornados to a hitting percentage of -.118.
The Bulldogs used a 4-0 run to take a 13-12 lead in the third frame, getting a kill and a block from sophomore middle blocker
Jenna Flanigin (Aldie, Va.). A 6-1 run gave the Tornados a 19-15 lead. A kill from
Erin Rollins, along with a Wingate error gave the Tornados a 24-19 advantage. Conner capped the third set with a kill.
Wingate used a 6-0 run to take a 14-9 lead in the fourth set. Cooke and senior middle blocker
Grace Krauser (Louisville, Ky.) each had a kill and a block in the spurt, while Murach capped it with a kill. Cooke and Potter teamed for a block to put the Bulldogs on top 21-15. Kills from Potter, Murach and Cooke made it 24-17, while a Brevard error finished the match.
Wingate hit .302 on the night, with 55 kills and 16 errors in 129 attacks. Brevard had 39 kills and 25 errors in 136 attacks, hitting .103 on the match. Rickher had a match-high three aces for the Bulldogs.
Wingate returns to action Friday, hosting Newberry at 7 p.m.
