Bulldogs sweep Trojans for fourth straight win

Box Score Anderson, S.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs swept the host Trojans of Anderson University in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action Saturday afternoon. Wingate won by scores of 25-19, 27-25 and 25-16 to improve to 13-2 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. Anderson falls to 9-9 overall and 2-6 in the SAC.
 
Redshirt junior right-side hitter Anna Hilton (Hickory, N.C.) had 10 kills and 12 digs to lead the Wingate attack, hitting .381. Sophomore middle blocker Lexi Potter (North Liberty, Iowa) had nine kills in 14 swings, hitting .643 on the day. Sophomore outside hitter Susie Murach (Burke, Va.) also had nine kills, while senior middle blocker Grace Krauser (Louisville, Ky.) had five kills with a .455 hitting percentage. Redshirt sophomore setter Alison Cooke (Davidson, N.C.) handed out 27 assists in two sets of action.
 
Hailey Pittman led the Trojans with nine kills. Shannon Gillespie added eight kills and 10 digs for the Trojans, while Victoria Wehrmann had seven kills. Meghan Cautero handed out 18 assists, while Alix Hooker collected 17 digs.
 
Wingate used a 4-0 run to take a 9-3 lead in the opening set, getting kills from Potter and Murach. A kill from Kelley Lacey trimmed the lead to four at 15-11. A Hilton kill pushed the lead back to five, but a 4-0 run from the Trojans made it 16-15. Lacey had two aces in the flurry. The Bulldogs answered with an 8-2 run to take a 24-17 advantage. Murach and Potter had two kills each in the spurt, while Potter and Cooke teamed for a block to push the lead to seven. Junior middle blocker Allison Rickher (Matthews, N.C.) capped the first set with a kill.
 
The Bulldogs used an 8-0 run to take a 15-10 lead in the second set. Krauser sparked the flurry with three kills. Pittman’s kill trimmed the lead to three at 17-14, but kills from Krauser and Hilton pushed the advantage back to five. Rickher’s kill gave Wingate a 22-17 lead, while a kill from junior outside hitter Kayla Osterhus (Matthews, N.C.) made it 23-18. Anderson answered with a 6-0 run to take a 24-23 lead. Pittman had two kills in the flurry, while the Bulldogs committed three errors. Wingate fought off set point on kill from Cooke, then took a 26-25 lead on an Anderson error. The Bulldogs claimed set two on another Trojan error.
 
The Bulldogs used an 8-0 run to take a commanding 16-4 lead in the third set. Potter had four kills in the flurry. A kill from Wehrmann trimmed the lead to five at 19-14, but Murach answered with a kill to push the advantage back to six. A Potter kill, followed by a pair of Hilton kills pushed the lead to 24-16. Murach finished the match with a kill.  
 
Wingate hit .244 on the match, with 50 kills and 19 errors in 127 attacks. Anderson had 31 kills and 15 errors in 124 attacks, hitting .129 on the afternoon.
 
The Bulldogs are back in action Tuesday, traveling to Catawba for a 7 p.m. start.
