Bulldogs fall 69-54 at #24 Barton

Wilson, N.C.----The 24th-ranked Barton College Bulldogs defeated visiting Wingate University 69-54 in NCAA Division II basketball action Wednesday night. Barton improves to 3-0 on the season, while the visiting Bulldogs fall to 1-2 overall.

Gerald Boston led the Barton attack with 16 points, knocking down nine-of-10 free throws on the night. Jon Hart added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Brian McNair had 10 points.

Senior forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) led the Wingate attack with 13 points and nine rebounds. Freshman guard Xavier Griffin (Marshville, N.C.) added 11 points, while senior guard Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) had eight points and six rebounds.

An 8-0 run gave the hosts an 18-7 lead over Wingate eight minutes into the opening half. Hart had a pair of dunks and a free throw to cap the spurt. A bucket from Ryan Canoy along with a pair of Tristan Thomas free throws pushed the advantage to 15 with 6:23 remaining in the half. A triple from Turner, followed by a Matilus layup got Wingate to within 11 with 3:19 to go. McNair drained a three 37 seconds before halftime to give the host Bulldogs a 39-25 advantage at intermission.

A layup from Jarrett Jernigan gave Barton a 17-point advantage eight points into the second half. A jumper from freshman forward Tracy Gathings (Greensboro, N.C.), followed by two Griffin free throws cut the lead to 11 with 8:23 remaining. A McNair layup and Aaron Brown jumper pushed the lead back to 17 with under five minutes remaining. Wingate would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way.

Barton shot 41.5 percent from the field, shooting 54.2 percent in the first half. The hosts knocked down 22-of-29 free throws on the night (75.9 percent). Wingate shot 36.5 percent from the field on the night, while hitting just 13-of-25 from the free throw line (52 percent). Wingate held a 36-35 rebounding advantage and a 15-6 edge in points in the paint. Barton converted 18 Wingate turnovers into 19 points.

Wingate returns to action Tuesday, hosting UNC Pembroke at 7 p.m.
