Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) posted a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Bulldogs used a strong second half surge to take a 71-45 NCAA Division II men’s basketball victory over UNC Pembroke Tuesday night in Cuddy Arena.
Wingate is 2-2 overall, while UNC Pembroke falls to 1-3 overall. The Bulldogs take a short Thanksgiving break before hosting Clayton State Saturday at 4 p.m. The UNCP Braves will face Coker in the Francis Marion Zaxby’s Tip-Off Clazzic the same day. Tip-off in Florence, S.C. is slated for 1 p.m.

The initial second-half hoop was a dunk by Blakeney at the 19:13 mark, cutting the UNC Pembroke deficit to 32-25. Wingate responded with a 14-2 surge, concluded by two Matilus free throws four minutes later. Both Matilus and senior guard

The Braves did not get any closer down the stretch. The Bulldogs’ 26-point final advantage was Wingate’s largest lead of the evening. Wingate shot 52.2 percent from the floor (exactly) in both halves, while UNC Pembroke managed only 30 percent shooting after intermission (nine-of-30). The Braves hit 32.7 percent of their field goal attempts Tuesday (17-of-52).
