Odell Turner hoop gives Wingate 64-62 victory at Catawba

Salisbury, N.C.----Wingate University senior forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) hit a hook shot with 2.6 seconds remaining to give the Bulldogs a 64-62 South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball victory over Catawba College Wednesday night in Goodman Gymnasium. The contest was the league opener for both teams as Wingate improves to 4-2 overall. Catawba is 3-3 overall.
 
The reigning SAC Player of the Week, Turner led the visiting Bulldogs with 15 points and nine rebounds. Wingate senior guard/forward Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) had 13 points, while sophomore guard Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) contributed 10 points. With the victory, Wingate head coach Brian Good earns his 70th triumph at the Bulldog helm.
 
Catawba senior forward Lee Martin (Mount Airy, N.C.) led all scorers with 20 points. Freshmen guards Elon Edwards (Greenville, N.C.) and Julian Sampah (Greensboro, N.C.) added 12 and 10 points, respectively. Both Martin and Edwards hit three three-point field goals each Wednesday.
 
Wingate senior point guard Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) made the play of the game prior to Turner’s heroics. Kincaid forced a five-second call on Catawba’s Edwards, giving the Bulldogs a final possession with 14 seconds left. Turner hit his seventh field goal in 12 attempts to give Wingate the victory.
 
The Bulldogs outscored the host Indians 42-18 in the paint. In addition, the contest featured 11 ties and 14 lead changes. Catawba led 51-43 on a Sampah jumper with 9:26 remaining. The eight-point advantage was the largest lead for either team.
 
Wingate went to work, scoring seven unanswered points to cut the deficit to 51-50 on a Matilus fast break lay-up with 6:17 to play. Matilus gave the Bulldogs their first lead in five minutes on another fast break hoop. The basket put Wingate up 54-53 at the 4:57 mark.
 
Martin’s third and final three-point field goal nudged Catawba’s lead to 59-54 at the 3:44 plateau. A Turner steal and dunk tied the score at 60-60 with 1:50 to play. A Martin inside basket gave Catawba a 62-60 edge 34 seconds later.
 
Matilus tied the score for the 11th (and last) time with 35 seconds to go. The hoop ended a flurry which saw the Bulldogs miss two inside attempts before finding the equalizer. Kincaid forced the Edwards turnover on the next possession, setting the stage for Turner’s game-winner.
 
Turner filled out his statistics line with nine rebounds, six steals, two assists and two blocked shots. Wingate junior center Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) contributed eight rebounds. Kincaid had five assists and five rebounds.
 
Both teams shot 44 percent from the floor. Wingate hit 26-of-59 field goals (44.1 percent), while Catawba made 21-of-47 tries (44.7 percent). The Indians made eight-of-16 three-point field goals (50 percent), while the Bulldogs converted four-of-13 from downtown (30.8 percent). Catawba outrebounded Wingate 36-32; senior center Maurice Knight (Portsmouth, Va.) had seven boards, while Edwards and Sampah collected six each.
 
The two teams travel Saturday. Wingate visits Winston-Salem State for a 7 p.m. contest. Catawba ventures to Anderson (S.C.) for a 4 p.m. league encounter.
