Ryan Daye (Burlington, N.C.) tallied 11 points each and four teammates contributed nine points apiece as the Bulldogs defeated Queens University of Charlotte 65-52 in the South Atlantic Conference/Conference Carolinas Tip-Off Classic Friday night in Cuddy Arena. The contest was the season opener for both teams.

Wingate stretched an 11-point halftime lead to 38-24 on a Daye inside jumper with 14:55 to play. Queens responded with a 14-4 run to cut the deficit to 42-38 on a Stabler three-pointer with 8:21 remaining. Four different Royals scored in the flurry, with freshman point guard
Joby Glymph (Lexington, S.C.) contributing five markers.
The Bulldogs answered with a 14-2 run to put the game out of reach. Four Wingate players contributed to the deal breaker, with Daye notching five points. Turner started things with a bucket and Alexander concluded the explosion with a dunk and two free throws on back-to-back possessions. The two charity tosses made the score 56-40 with four minutes left.

Eddie Lewis (Rocky Point, N.C.) ended the early uprising at the 15:45 mark. Queens cut the deficit to 15-11 on a bucket by senior guard

A Parker bucket made the score 21-11 with 9:03 to go, while an Alexander triple at 7:44 gave the hosts a 24-13 advantage. The 11-point margin was Wingate’s biggest lead of the first frame. A jumper by Daye (1:51) concluded the first half scoring, giving the Bulldogs the 31-20 edge at intermission.
The two teams had opening night jitters, as both Wingate (39.6 percent) and Queens (40.4 percent) struggled to find their shooting touch. Each team made four three-pointers each, as Stabler hit three for the visitors. Lewis hit two triples for the hosts.
Rebounding was knotted at 36-36, with Queens junior forward
Brent Evans (Beaufort, S.C.) topping the charts with 12 boards. Turner had eight rebounds for the Bulldogs. Kincaid led all defenders with three steals.
The SAC/Conference Carolinas Tip-Off Classic continues Saturday. Wingate plays Limestone Saturday night at 8 p.m., while Queens will face Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
