Newberry, S.C.----After allowing 48 first half points, the Wingate University Bulldogs held the league’s top-scoring team to only 21 second-half points en route to an 85-69 victory at Newberry College in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Wednesday night. The Bulldogs win their fifth straight, improving to 15-10 overall and 11-4 in the SAC. All five wins during the streak have been double-digit victories. Newberry falls to 13-10 overall and 7-8 in the conference.  
 
Senior guard Jaime Vaughn (Tallahassee, Fla.) scored 17 of his 22 points in the first half to lead the Wingate attack. Vaughn has scored 114 points in his last four contests against the Wolves, averaging 28.5 points per game. Sophomore forward Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.) added 12 points, four rebounds and three blocks for the Bulldogs, who had eight players score at least six points. Junior guard Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.) filled up the stat sheet with eight points, seven assists, six rebounds and two steals, while junior forward Odell Turner (Charlotte, N.C.) had seven points and a game-high eight rebounds.
 
Freshman forward Dondray Walker (Fountain Inn, S.C.) led the Wolves with 19 points to go along with five rebounds. Freshman guard Aegir Steinarsson (Reykjavik, Iceland) added 12 points, while sophomore guard Brunes Charles (Naples, Fla.) chipped in with 10 points for Newberry.
 
Both teams came out on fire, with Newberry taking a 16-14 lead four minutes into the game. Vaughn had 12 quick points, while the Wolves hit their first six shots from the field. Turner hit a free throw at the 11:11 mark to tie the game at 24. Newberry would then go on a 15-4 run to take an 11-point lead. Junior guard Shamel Akins (Charlotte, N.C.) started the spurt with a jumper, while Charles added six straight points later in the flurry. A triple from senior forward Matt Dixon (Elizabeth City, N.C.) with 6:02 remaining capped the run, making it 39-28.
 
Wingate scored the next seven points to trim the deficit to four on a steal and layup from junior guard Chase Smith (Upper Marlboro, Md.) at the 4:44 mark. Back-to-back jumpers from Vaughn got the Bulldogs to within one at 44-43 with 1:02 remaining. Walker made a pair of free throws, but a layup from freshman forward Mike Tyson (Kinston, N.C.) cut the lead back to one. A layup from Charles with 33 seconds to go put Newberry on top 48-45 at halftime.
 
A layup and a dunk from Parker put Wingate on top 57-52 five minutes into the second half. The Wolves scored the next seven points, taking a two-point lead on a triple from Walker at the 13:23 mark. The ‘Dogs responded with 12 straight points to take a 69-59 lead. Junior forward Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) started the spurt with a layup, while adding four more points in the flurry. A layup from Smith with 10:25 remaining put Wingate’s lead in double figures.
 
A triple from Steinarsson cut Wingate’s lead to five with 8:52 to go. Vaughn answered with a bucket at the other end, while Alexander followed with a jumper to push the lead back to nine. A layup and a jumper from Kincaid put the ‘Dogs on top 77-66. Alexander buried a three to push the lead to 14.  The lead would remain in double figures the rest of the way.
 
Wingate shot 49.3 percent from the field, hitting five-of-15 shots from three-point range (33.3 percent). Newberry shot 49.1 percent from the field, but shot only 28 percent in the second half after shooting 67.9 percent from the floor in the opening half. The Bulldogs out-rebounded the Wolves 40-30 on the night, while scoring 29 points off of 23 Newberry turnovers. Wingate scored 46 points in the paint on the night, while blocking eight shots.
 
The Bulldogs are back in action Saturday, traveling to Mars Hill for a 4 p.m. start.
