#21 Anderson uses second half run to rally past Wingate

The 21st-ranked Trojans of Anderson University trailed 25-10 in the first half, but used a 14-0 run early in the second half to notch a 63-57 victory over the visiting Wingate University Bulldogs in South Atlantic Conference men’s basketball action Wednesday night. The Trojans improve to 21-4 overall and 16-1 in the SAC. Wingate sees its six-game winning streak come to an end, falling to 16-11 overall and 12-5 in the conference.
 
Nick Trull led the Anderson attack with 17 points, hitting five-of-seven shots from three-point range. Denzail Jones added 15 points for the Trojans, while also notching five assists and four rebounds. Taylor Shugart had seven points, seven rebounds, two steals and a block.
 
Senior guard Jaime Vaughn (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Junior guard Eddie Lewis (Rocky Point, N.C.) had 11 points each to lead the Wingate attack. Lewis knocked down three triples on the night, while Vaughn added a team-best three steals. Junior guard Paidrick Matilus (Boynton Beach, Fla.) added nine points and six rebounds for the Bulldogs.
 
Wingate used an 11-0 run to take an early 11-3 lead, with Vaughn scoring the last six points of the spurt. Back-to-back threes from Lewis put Wingate on top by 12 at the 11-minute mark. A triple from junior guard Ethan Kincaid (Morganton, N.C.), followed by another three from Vaughn put the ‘Dogs on top 25-10 with 6:17 remaining in the half.
 
The Trojans answered with a 7-2 run, cutting the lead to seven on a three-point play from Shugart with 2:48 to go. Matilus knocked down a pair of free throws to get Wingate’s lead back to double figures with 33 seconds remaining. Myles Daniel hit a free throw eight seconds before halftime, cutting Wingate’s lead to 32-23 as the teams headed to the locker room. The Bulldogs scored 17 points off of Anderson turnovers in the first half, while the Trojans did not score off a Wingate turnover.
 
Anderson came out on fire in the second half, going on a 14-0 run to take a five-point lead. Jones tied the game with a pair of free throws, while capping the flurry with a triple at the 14:15 mark to give Anderson a 37-32 advantage. Trull drained a three to give the Trojans a six-point lead with 11:46 remaining. A dunk and a layup from sophomore forward Jeff Parker (Madison, N.C.), followed by a jumper from junior guard Quan Alexander (Charlotte, N.C.) tied the game at 43 with just under 10 minutes remaining.
 
After an Anderson bucket, sophomore forward Deion Turman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) grabbed an offensive rebound and hit a jumper in the paint to tie the game at 45. The Trojans would answer with a 13-3 run to take a double-digit lead. Trull and Jones started the spurt with layups, while Chandler Hash added a big triple. Trull ended the flurry with a pair of threes to make it 58-48 with 3:35 remaining. The Bulldogs would get no closer than six the rest of the way.
 
Anderson shot 42.6 percent from the field, while knocking down 10-of-22 shots from three-point range (45.5 percent). Wingate shot 32.8 percent from the field on the night, including 27.3 percent shooting in the second half. The Bulldogs were six-for-25 from three-point range (24 percent). Wingate out-rebounded Anderson 38-35 on the night, while holing a 22-14 advantage in the paint.
 
The Bulldogs return to action Saturday, finishing the regular season at home against Brevard at 4 p.m. Wingate has clinched the number three seed in next week’s Food Lion SAC Tournament.
