Charlotte, N.C.----Barry (Fla.) University led wire-to-wire to take the team championship trophy in the
12th annual J. Ralph Hargett Memorial Intercollegiate women’s golf tournament, hosted by Wingate University at the Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation (par 72, 5823 yards). The Bucs shot 318 Tuesday for a final score of 625, 14 strokes ahead of second-place Columbus State University. Wingate tied South Atlantic Conference rival Lincoln Memorial for ninth place at 658. Seventeen schools and 90 student-athletes participated in this year’s event.
UNC Pembroke junior
Meghan Moore (Durham, N.C.) earned medalist honors with a 152. A first team All-Peach Belt Conference selection last year, Moore shot 76 both days. She eagled the par four, 368-yard third hole Tuesday. The two strokes were huge, as she edged first round co-leader and Barry freshman
Daniela Murray (Sao Paulo, Brazil) by one stroke for the gold medal.
Murray had a 153 to claim second place. She shot 79 Tuesday to go with her 74 from Monday. Four players tied for third place (154) to complete the all-tournament team: Columbus State junior
Kimesha Anthony (St. George’s, Antigua), Armstrong Atlantic State senior
Kimberly Knox (Jacksonville, Fla.), Florida Tech freshman
Jara’ Templet (Baton Rouge, La.) and Barry freshman
Nancy Vergara (Caracas, Venezuela).
Vergara and Catawba freshman
Madison Kennedy (Salisbury, N.C.) topped the tournament charts in the par three scoring with a one-under-par. Knox and Moore were first on the par four scoring list, as both student-athletes shot plus-four on the par fours. Templet had the most pars with 25.
Murray and Tusculum freshman
Emee Herbert (Johns Creek, Ga.) led the way on the par five scoring list, as both players were two-under-par for the week (on the par fives). Templet was next at one-under-par. Belmont Abbey freshman
Rebecca Mirovich (Mount Pleasant, N.C.) had six birdies, tops on the Hargett Memorial list.
Wingate freshman
Lucia Careaga Herrera (Madrid, Spain) led the host Bulldogs with a 158. She shot 79 both days to finish in 13th place. Careaga Herrera had 23 pars during the two-day event; only two players recorded more. Classmate
Karli Soracco (Turner, Maine) posted a 166, while sophomore
Samantha Pugh-Gilder (Pinehurst, N.C.) had a 168.
Bulldog junior
Megan Levy (Zebulon, N.C.) had a 171, while sophomore
Morgan Pegram (Pfafftown, N.C.) recorded a 175. Pegram shaved 11 strokes from her first day score, as she recorded an 82 Tuesday. Pegram had two birdies during Tuesday’s second round.
Wingate freshman
Kelly Mansfield (Newport, N.C.) followed Pegram’s lead, lopping 13 strokes from her Monday total with a Tuesday score of 84. Mansfield’s Tuesday round is the best of her young intercollegiate career. Bulldog sophomore
Miranda Reed (Monroe, N.C.) had a 107 Tuesday. Both Mansfield and Reed played as individuals in the 2012 Hargett Memorial.
Next on the horizon for the Bulldogs is the 15th annual Agnes McAmis Memorial Women’s Golf Invitational Monday and Tuesday. The McAmis Memorial is hosted by Tusculum College at Link Hills Country Club in Greeneville, Tenn.
