Wingate finishes seventh in Agnes McAmis Memorial

Careaga Herrera and Levy earn spots in top 25 listing

Greeneville, Tenn.----The Wingate University women’s golf team finished seventh in the 15th annual Agnes McAmis Memorial Women’s Golf Invitational at Link Hills Country Club Tuesday. The Bulldogs recorded a 319 Tuesday to supplement their 316 from Monday. Eighteen teams and 91 student-athletes participated in this year’s event, hosted by Tusculum College at Link Hills Country Club (par 72, 5805-yards).
 
 Wingate freshman Lucia Careaga Herrera (Madrid, Spain) and junior Megan Levy (Zebulon, N.C.) tied for 23rd place, as both Bulldogs finished the 36-hole event at 155. Careaga Herrera had a 77 Tuesday, while Levy posted a 79.
 
Bulldog sophomore Samantha Pugh-Gilder (Pinehurst, N.C.) was steady, as she carded 80 both days to tie for 36th place at 160. Classmate Morgan Pegram (Pfafftown, N.C.) was five strokes back at 165, while freshman Karli Soracco (Turner, Maine) completed the event at 167.
 
Wingate sophomore Kathryn Rand (Hampstead, N.C.) played as an individual, tying for 31st place at 158. Rand had an 82 Tuesday to go with a 76 from Monday. Tusculum junior Jillian Corum led the charge as she fired a one-under-par 71 on Tuesday to finish with a school record 141 (minus-three), two shots ahead of runner-up Rachel Uremovich of Lander, who carded a 69-74=143 (minus-one).

Tusculum captures the McAmis Memorial team title for a fourth time in the tournament’s history, but first since 2000.  The Pioneers finished nine shots ahead of tournament runner-up Lincoln Memorial, who posted 604.  Lander placed third with 606, followed by Columbus State (607), Carson-Newman (626), West Florida (633), Wingate (635), Pfeiffer (640), North Georgia (647), Anderson (648), Erskine (648), Catawba (657), King (664), West Georgia (668), Belmont Abbey (693), Limestone (723), Mars Hill (726) and Brevard (730).

Columbus State’s Kimesha Anthony finished third with back-to-back rounds of 72-72=144, while Catalina Olarte of North Georgia and LMU’s Brittany McCown each posted 148 to tie for fourth and round out the All-Tournament Team.  Carson-Newman’s Jennifer Oliver also carded a 74-74=148 to make it a three-way tie for fourth, but lost in a play-off with Olarte and McCown.

The Agnes McAmis Memorial concludes 2011-12 regular season competition for the Bulldogs. Wingate will prepare for the 2012 Food Lion SAC tournament April 16-17 in Conover, N.C. Lenoir-Rhyne hosts this year’s event at the Rock Barn Golf & Spa.
