Steve Hammond (Warsaw, Ohio) posted an NCAA Division II provisional time of 9:18.88 in the 3000 meter Steeplechase Sunday night at the Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier. The event was hosted by North Carolina State University on the Derr Track.
Hammond is the first Bulldog men’s track and field student-athlete to post an NCAA provisional time. The NCAA will announce the 2012 national championship field on Tuesday. The NCAA Division II men’s and women’s track and field national championship meet will be held May 24-26 in Pueblo, Colo.
Last Sunday, Hammond ran a 9:20.10 in the men’s 3000 meter steeplechase at the Duke Twilight meet. The NCAA Division II provisional standard is 9:20.00. Hammond won the men’s 3000 meter Steeplechase (9:29.09) at the Southeast Regional meet April 21. Thanks to the efforts of Hammond and his teammates, Wingate finished second in the regional meet.

Christina Matheny (Akron, Ohio) participated in the women’s high jump at the Wolfpack Last Chance Qualifier. She cleared 1.60 meters. She earned Wingate’s first-ever NCAA Division II provisional mark with a leap of 1.68 meters at the Duke Twilight meet. Matheny and her Bulldog teammates won the Southeast Regional meet in Wingate’s second year with an NCAA track and field program.
