Bulldogs rally for thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Newberry

Box Score Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored the game-tying goal in the final five minutes of regulation, then scored the game-winner 2:15 into overtime to secure a 3-2 victory over the visiting Newberry College Wolves in South Atlantic Conference women’s soccer action Wednesday night. Wingate improves to 5-1-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Wolves fall to 4-4-1 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
 
The first half went scoreless, with the Bulldogs holding a 14-7 advantage in shots. The Wolves held a 6-5 edge in shots on goal in the opening half. Wingate wasted no time getting on the board in the second half, when sophomore midfielder Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) netted her ninth goal of the year 25 seconds after halftime to make it 1-0.
 
The Wolves had the answer, tying it seven minutes later when senior midfielder Theresa Berman (Toronto, Ontario) lined one into the corner from just inside the box, making it 1-1.
Newberry took the lead in the 60th minute when freshman midfielder Heather Stork (Lexington, S.C.) lined in a pass from senior defender Cassie Smith (Spartanburg, S.C.) right in front of the net, giving the Wolves the 2-1 advantage.
 
Wingate tied it with 4:55 remaining in regulation. Montgomery took a lead pass from freshman midfielder Danielle Cremmen (Acton, Mass.) and found the opposite corner from a tough angle, tying the match and forcing overtime. Montgomery has a league-best 10 goals this year, and has scored multiple goals in four games this season.
 
Senior forward Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario) lined a shot from just outside the box 2:15 into overtime that was knocked down by a Newberry hand ball inside the box, leading to a penalty kick. Senior defender Kelly Moldenhauer (Mint Hill, N.C.) found the back of the net on the penalty kick to give Wingate the 3-2 victory.
 
The Bulldogs piled up 34 shots on the night, compared to Newberry’s 13. Wingate had 15 shots on goal in the contest, while the Wolves had 10 on goal. Montgomery had a game-high 11 total shots, six of which were on goal. Senior goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) had 10 saves to preserve the Wingate victory. Freshman goalkeeper Rebecca Darley (Wolcott, Conn.) piled up 15 saves for the Wolves.
 
Wingate returns to action Saturday, traveling to Brevard for a 2 p.m. start. The Wolves host Lenoir-Rhyne Saturday at 2 p.m.
