‘Dogs net three second half goals en route to 4-2 win at Queens

Box Score Charlotte, N.C.----The Wingate University Bulldogs scored three times in the second half Wednesday afternoon to secure a 4-2 victory at Queens University of Charlotte in NCAA Division II women’s soccer action. The Bulldogs improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Royals fall to 1-1 on the year. Wingate, who finished fourth nationally with three goals per game in 2011, already has 10 goals in two games this season.
 
Senior forward Shelby Forza (Pickering, Ontario) got the Bulldogs on the board in the 32nd minute, netting her first goal of the season. Forza scored five times in the 2011 season.
 
Queens got on the board five minutes later to tie the match at one. Senior midfielder Megan Sload (Conestoga, Pa.) scored for the Royals, with the assist coming from sophomore forward Macie McGuffin (Dallas, Texas).
 
Wingate wasted no time getting on the board after intermission, with sophomore forward Jade Montgomery (Monroe, N.C.) scoring her third goal of the season to put the Bulldogs on top 2-1. Freshman forward Kalyn Moesky (Hickory, N.C.) registered her first career assist on the play.
 
Montgomery scored her second goal of the game in the 65th minute to push the Wingate advantage to two. The 2011 All-SAC and All-Region performer scored multiple goals in a game for the second time this year and the sixth time in her young career. Junior midfielder Chandler Murphy (Daniels Island, S.C.) notched her second assist of the year on the play.
 
The Royals would not go away, cutting the Wingate lead to one when McGuffin scored with 18 minutes remaining in regulation.
 
The Bulldogs had the answer, pushing the lead back to two just eight minutes later when junior midfielder Taryn Grivois (Murrieta, Calif.) netted her first career goal to make it 4-2.
 
Wingate outshot Queens 16-6 on the afternoon, while holding an 11-3 advantage in shots on goal. Senior goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) had a save to preserve the Bulldog victory. Junior goalkeeper Kelsey Seretis (Norfolk, Va.) registered seven saves for the Royals.
 
Wingate returns to action Saturday, hosting Lander at 7 p.m. The Royals host Pfeiffer Saturday at 5 p.m.
