Wingate and Lander battle to 1-1 tie Saturday

Box Score

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s soccer team scored in the first four minutes, but could not score again as the Bulldogs tied Lander University 1-1 in NCAA Division II Southeast Region action Saturday night at the WU Soccer Complex. Wingate is 2-0-1 overall, while Lander is 1-1-2 overall.

“This match was our first true mental test of the season…with the extra pressure for our first home match,” Wingate head coach Gary Curneen says. “I am proud of the team…the handled things pretty well. We realize we have a ways to go and plenty of work to do.”

The two teams scored once each in the first 11 minutes. Wingate struck first, as junior defender Chelsey Horan (Waxhaw, N.C.) found the back of the nets in the fourth minute. The Capital One Academic All-America® candidate scores for the first time this season.

Lander scored the equalizer less than seven minutes later, as senior forward Jamie Shaw (Columbia, S.C.) scored on an assist from sophomore defender Hilary Ferguson (Charleston, S.C.). Shaw has two goals this season for the Peach Belt Conference members.

The Bulldogs outshot the Bearcats 19-14. The two teams recorded six shots on goal each. Wingate senior goalkeeper Miriam Boucher (Calgary, Alberta) had five saves. Lander sophomore goalkeeper Kelsey Blair (Fort Mill, S.C.) matched Boucher with five stops.

Wingate continues its Peach Belt tour Monday, visiting USC Aiken for a 7 p.m. contest. The USC Aiken encounter is the first of a three-match road trip for the Bulldogs. Lander follows the same pattern, hosting South Atlantic Conference member Mars Hill Wednesday at 7 p.m.
