Wingate visits Anderson (S.C.) Wednesday

AU contest is third of four league road games for WU

Wingate, N.C.----The Wingate University women’s basketball team plays its third South Atlantic Conference road game in its last four contests Wednesday, visiting Anderson (S.C.) University for a 6 p.m. encounter at the Abney Athletic Center. The Bulldogs enter the AU contest 9-7 overall and 3-3 in the SAC. The Anderson Trojans are 11-5 overall and 5-1 in the SAC.

On Saturday, Wingate junior guard Janitsha Williams (Statesville, N.C.) had a season-high 26 points to lead the Bulldogs past the visiting Brevard College Tornados 64-59 in Cuddy Arena and Thomas Koontz Family Court. Williams hit 10-of-15 shots from the field on the afternoon, adding seven rebounds while knocking down two-of-four shots from beyond the arc.

Bulldog freshman forward Morgan McGee (Durham, N.C.) had 12 points and 10 rebounds Saturday, while senior guard Sarah Wollett (Raleigh, N.C.) added 13 points, four rebounds and four assists. Wingate dominated the boards, out-rebounding Brevard 45-28 while piling up 17 second-chance points (compared to Brevard’s four). The Bulldogs made 56.5 percent of their field goals in the pivotal second half.

Williams is averaging 16.3 points per game and 6.5 rebounds per game in SAC games, more than her 16-game averages (13.6 points, 6.4 rebounds). Wollett and junior forward Chantal Dunbar (Norfolk, Va.) are scoring 13.2 and 12.4 points per game, respectively, in league play, besting their 16-game averages (11.7, 11.0). Dunbar is averaging a double-double in SAC play with her 11.6 rebounds per game in six league tilts.

Dunbar leads the SAC with her 9.9 rebounds per game. She shares the SAC lead (with Newberry sophomore center Hayley Lepaio) with her seven double-doubles this season. Three of her seven double-doubles have occurred in league play. Thanks to Dunbar and her teammates, Wingate is out-rebounding its opponents by more than 11 boards per game this season (44.7-33.5).

Wingate defeated Anderson three times last season, including a nail-biting 64-58 victory in the first round of the 2012 Food Lion SAC tournament (Feb. 29). Wollett had 12 points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals in the Leap Day contest. Senior guard Alissa Diaz (Coral Springs, Fla.) led the Trojans with 19 points.

The Bulldogs won the first 2011-12 regular season contest 61-51 at Wingate on Jan. 25, 2012. Wingate finished the game with 20-10 run. Diaz led all scorers with a career-high 29 points. The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire to take a 74-61 victory at Anderson Feb. 22, 2012. Williams and senior forward Tish Logan (Suitland, Md.) had 10 points each as two of the four Wingate players to hit double digits.

Anderson has won four SAC games in a row, including a 60-46 home decision over Carson-Newman Saturday. Diaz had a game-high 19 points. The reigning SAC Player of the Week, Diaz leads the AU Trojans with her 16.7 points per game. Anderson senior guard Amanda Parris (Summerville, Ga.) contributes 9.0 points per game, while senior forward Breonda Shannon (Columbia, S.C.) adds 8.9 points per game and a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game.

Both teams hit the road Saturday. Wingate concludes its four-of-five SAC road game stretch with a 6 p.m. league contest at Lincoln Memorial. Anderson also ventures up the mountain, visiting Brevard for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
