Salisbury, N.C.----The Wingate University football team scored the final 20 points of the contest, taking a 23-22 South Atlantic Conference victory over Catawba College Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. Bulldog junior running back Nestor Lantigua (Wellington, Fla.) scored the first two Wingate touchdowns, while redshirt senior quarterback Robbie Nallenweg (Asheville, N.C.) completed seven-of-eight passes (for 57 yards) on the game-winning drive (NCAA quickie statistics).

Wingate redshirt freshman wide receiver Angelo Crawford-Reid (Gastonia, N.C.) scored the game-winning TD on a nine-yard pass from Nallenweg. With the come-from-behind triumph, Wingate improves to 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the SAC. Catawba slips to 3-3 overall and 1-3 in the SAC. The Bulldogs have won seven of the last 10 contests in the series, including the last three in a row.

"This is a great team win for us," Wingate head coach Joe Reich says. "All week, we've been preaching to the guys…don't forget the process…one play at a time, one play at a time. Our hard work came through for us today."

"When a team has the will to win, the victories will come," Wingate redshirt junior defensive back Jon Jimenez (Scottsdale, Ariz.) says. "Each player did his job, bolted down and made plays. Our young guys were relentless today. This is a great win for our football team."

Crawford-Reid scored his first career touchdown on a nine-yard connection with Nallenweg to tie the game at 22-22. Wingate's Capital One Academic All-America® candidate signal caller completed seven-of-eight passes (for 57 yards) on the pressure-packed drive, utilizing six different receivers. Redshirt junior placekicker/punter Patrick Smith (Hickory, N.C.) provided the go-ahead point with his PAT at the 4:31 mark of the fourth quarter.

Catawba struck first, as freshman linebacker Jalen Forrest (Winston-Salem, N.C.) recorded his first career interception to put the Indians in business on the Wingate 30-yard line. Four plays later, freshman running back David Burgess (Morganton, N.C.) scored on a 12-yard run. Indian redshirt freshman quarterback Mike Sheehan (Wilmington, N.C.) converted the two-point conversion rush to give the hosts an 8-0 lead at the 10:22 mark.

Wingate answered early in the second quarter, as Smith nailed a 32-yard field goal. The triple concluded a 13-play, 52-yard drive for the visiting Bulldogs. Catawba answered with its longest drive of the afternoon to take a 12-point lead.

Burgess did the honors, scoring on a one-yard run with 7:28 to play before halftime. Sophomore place kicker Chad Hollandsworth (Kernersville, N.C.) added the PAT to conclude the 14-play, 67-yard drive and make the score 15-3 Indians at intermission.

Wingate's first third quarter possession ended on a fumble. Catawba needed only five plays to find the end zone, as Burgess collected his third TD on a one-yard plunge. The Hollandsworth extra point put the Indians up 22-3 with 11:42 remaining in the third quarter.

Catawba would not score again, as the visiting Bulldogs scored the final 20 points of the contest. Lantigua scored the first of his two touchdowns to conclude a 10-play, 44-yard drive midway through the third quarter. Lantigua's two-yard TD run at the 5:49 plateau cut the Wingate deficit to 22-9 after the Bulldogs failed on a two-point conversion try.

A short Indian punt gave the Bulldogs possession on the Wingate 39-yard line. On fourth-and-one from the Catawba 18-yard line, Lantigua found a crease to pull the visitors within one score. Smith split the uprights to conclude a nine-play, 61-yard drive and make the score Catawba 22, Wingate 16 with 15 ticks left on the third quarter clock.

Wingate's game-winning drive was the result of a Catawba fumble. Bulldog freshman defensive tackle Auntrell Mack (Irmo, S.C.) recorded the takeaway to give Wingate the ball on the Bulldog 40-yard line. Nallenweg calmly marched his troops down the field on a 10-play, 60-yard drive, while consuming 4:45 from the game clock.

Both teams ran 65 plays from the line of scrimmage. Wingate gained 244 yards total offense, while Catawba compiled 333 yards. Nallenweg completed 27-of-34 passes (79.4 percent completion rate) for 186 yards and one TD. Wingate leads the SAC (and charts sixth in the NCAA Division II) in completion percentage. Nallenweg is first in the SAC and third in the nation in the same category.

Nallenweg spread the love, utilizing 10 different receivers. Wingate sophomore wide receiver Tim Nalesnik (Cary, N.C.) topped the Bulldog charts with seven receptions for 55 yards. Lantigua rushed seven times for 45 yards and two touchdowns.

Catawba senior quarterback Danny O'Brien (Kernersville, N.C.) matched Wingate's Nallenweg completion for completion, as he had the exact same numbers with his 27-of-34 afternoon. The University of Wisconsin transfer compiled 203 yards passing. Indian senior wide receiver Nate Charest (Charlotte, N.C.) had eight receptions for 60 yards. Burgess led all rushers with 78 yards on 18 carries.

Catawba freshman linebacker Desmond Lackey (Mocksville, N.C.) and junior linebacker Jason Taylor (Bahama, N.C.) had eight tackles each for the hosts. Lackey was involved in two quarterback sacks as the Indians sacked Nallenweg four times Saturday.

Wingate returns home Saturday, Oct. 19, hosting Brevard College for a 1:30 p.m. SAC game. The Bulldogs will celebrate Sports Hall of Fame Day and Student-Athlete Appreciation Day. Brevard defeated Mars Hill 35-7 Saturday during the school's homecoming festivities. Catawba hosts number 13 UNC Pembroke the same day and time.
